What to know about the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa near Reykjavik
Located about forty minutes from Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon offers an open-air thermal experience set amidst fields of black lava. This site has become one of the most recognizable locations in Iceland, largely due to its unique atmosphere and milky blue waters heated by geothermal energy.
Warm water in a lunar landscape
The first thing you notice upon arrival is the contrast between the milky blue water and the dark volcanic rock. Naturally enriched with silica and minerals, the water is kept at a comfortable temperature between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius (98 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit). If you have sensitive skin, be aware that this high mineral content can have a drying effect. The facilities are modern and well-integrated into the landscape, featuring showers, changing rooms, and a swim-up bar.
A space designed for relaxation and commerce
The site is highly organized but often crowded. It is best to book online to avoid issues, especially during peak season. Packages that include basic entry, drinks, masks, or meals are available. If you are looking for a quieter experience, aim for the morning or evening hours, when the low-angle Icelandic light creates a distinct atmosphere.
Wilder alternatives nearby
The Blue Lagoon is an enjoyable experience, especially for a first trip to Iceland, but if you prefer natural settings with fewer crowds, other hot springs like Reykjadalur or the Secret Lagoon are worth considering. They sometimes require more effort to reach, but they offer a different kind of immersion, away from the commercial feel of the main site.

The Blue Lagoon is the "historic" spa of Iceland. First, because it is located near Reykjavik. Then, because it is found in a protected environment, right in the middle of nature, with the volcano close by. Finally, the blue color of its water is incredible. During my second trip to Iceland, due to the eruptions, the Blue Lagoon was closed and I tested Sky Lagoon, very good too but less "natural."
