Visiting Notre-Dame de la Serra Chapel: panoramic views of Calvi

Perched high above the coastline, Notre-Dame de la Serra Chapel occupies a space defined by both quiet spirituality and expansive views. Overlooking the bay of Calvi, this 15th-century chapel draws visitors for its tranquil atmosphere and the sweeping perspective it provides over the surrounding region.

A site steeped in history and faith

Built in 1479, the chapel serves as a significant site of pilgrimage for the people of the Balagne region. Every September, a procession is held here to honor the Virgin, the patron protector of the city. A statue of the Virgin stands near the building with her arms open toward the sea, symbolizing her role in watching over the sailors and residents of Calvi. The grounds remain a place of quiet reflection and observation.

An expansive panorama

The location of Notre-Dame de la Serra Chapel provides one of the most notable viewpoints in Corsica. From the esplanade in front of the chapel, the bay of Calvi spreads out in full view, with blue waters set against the backdrop of the mountains. On a clear day, you can see the peaks of the Monte Cinto massif, which is the highest point on the island. The site is a favorite for photographers, especially at sunset when the golden light shifts across the landscape.

Planning your visit

The site is easily reachable by car, and there is a small parking area nearby. For those who prefer to be active, a trail leads to the chapel on foot from Calvi, offering a walk through the Corsican maquis shrubland. The path is well-marked and relatively short, though it includes a few rocky sections. There are no facilities on-site, such as restaurants or shops, which helps maintain the quiet and character of the location.

Opening hours

The Notre-Dame de la Serra Chapel is accessible year-round, outdoors, with no time restrictions. Religious services take place primarily during the annual pilgrimage in September.

Notre Dame de la Serra

I really recommend visiting Notre Dame de la Serra. I go there often when I am in Corsica. The place is simple, but has a very pure beauty, with that large statue of the Virgin Mary looking out over the bay. You get a beautiful view of Calvi, but also of the mountains in the distance. The presence of the benches makes it the perfect spot for a break up high and in the cool air.
