What to know about Algajola Beach: a stretch of sand between the maquis and the Mediterranean

On the Balagne coast, tucked between L'Île-Rousse and Calvi, Algajola Beach stretches out along the shore. This long expanse of sand and pebbles, bordered by turquoise Mediterranean waters, is a prime spot for relaxing. Overlooked by the old village of Algajola and its fort, it offers an idyllic setting where history meets nature.

Why visit Algajola Beach?

Algajola Beach is a top choice for families and water sports enthusiasts. The shallow water near the shoreline and the easy access make it a popular spot for safe swimming. The wind is often perfect for board sports, while the scenery, set between the fragrant maquis shrubland and the sea, invites quiet contemplation. It strikes a balance between activity and tranquility.

A beach with many faces

The beach spans nearly two kilometers, offering different vibes. The section near the village of Algajola is more developed, with paillotes (beach bars) and equipment rentals. As you head toward Aregno, the beach becomes wilder, with quieter zones. The light sand is flecked with small pebbles smoothed by the sea, and the surf provides a constant, rhythmic melody.

The shades of the Corsican water

The water is remarkably clear, with hues ranging from turquoise near the shore to a deep azure further out. This transparency is ideal for snorkeling, allowing you to observe marine life near the rocks. The temperature is pleasant during the season, inviting long swims.

Water sports and a historic fort

The steady wind that blows along this part of the coast makes Algajola Beach a well-known spot for water sports. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are especially popular. Local beach clubs offer lessons and equipment rentals. In the background, the Fortin d'Algajola (Algajola Fort), dating back to the 16th century, keeps watch over the shore. A remnant of the Genoese past, it adds a layer of history and character to the landscape.

Local tip: If you enjoy snorkeling, explore the rocky areas at the ends of the beach. You will find a richer variety of underwater flora and fauna. Bring water shoes for extra comfort on the pebbles.

The charms of the surroundings

Beyond the beach, the village of Algajola, with its narrow alleyways and Mediterranean atmosphere, is worth a visit. The area also offers great hiking opportunities in the maquis. The proximity of the perched villages of Balagne, such as Pigna or Sant'Antonino, allows you to vary your activities and explore the Corsican backcountry after a day of lounging on the beach.

The big beach

There are two beaches in Algajola: a small, more "secret" one accessible from inside the village, and this one, a much larger sandy beach. The first one will seem quieter, but you are quickly right on top of each other. I really like the big beach, as there is enough room to set up. The water gets deep quickly, which is a bit strange.

While swimming, you have a beautiful view of the village. The ice cream shops nearby are perfect for a tasty break.
