The house where Napoleon Bonaparte was born

The Maison Bonaparte Museum, located in the heart of Ajaccio, is dedicated to the Bonaparte family, specifically Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born here on August 15, 1769. This historic home, now a museum, offers a direct look into the childhood of Napoleon and the daily life of his family.

The museum displays period personal items, portraits, furniture, and documents that provide a look at the environment where Napoleon grew up. You can see the room where he was born, along with other rooms in the family home that have been restored to reflect the late 18th century.

Stories that tell History

The permanent exhibits trace the history of the Bonaparte family from the 17th century through the 19th century, highlighting Napoleon's rise to power and his impact on global history. Original documents, weapons, and military uniforms from the Napoleonic era are on display, providing a detailed perspective on his military and political career.

Visiting the Maison Bonaparte Museum gives you the chance to better understand the family and historical context that shaped one of the most influential figures in history. Experienced guides and multilingual signs provide deep information on every display.

An immersive and educational visit

You do not need to be an expert on Napoleon to soak up the atmosphere of this unique place. Upon entering the French emperor's birthplace, you get to discover his bedroom, a living room, and furniture and period items presented with a great educational approach in a beautiful setting. I learned a bit more about the childhood and private life of this historical figure. I highly recommend this visit.

The Emperor's childhood

My favorite memory of Ajaccio is definitely visiting the Maison Bonaparte. This place is packed with history and really lets visitors dive into Napoleon's childhood. The building itself, which the family acquired in the 17th century, has been preserved so well. The house lets you get a look at the Emperor's personal items. You really get a sense of how important the Bonaparte family was to the history of Corsica and France. You do not need to be a history buff to enjoy it because the museum layout is super clear.

Very interesting

You cannot visit the city of Ajaccio without a tour of the Bonaparte Museum. Napoleon is the iconic figure of the city. This museum is located in the house where he lived. You can see the period furniture there, especially his bedroom from when he was a little boy. I found the museum really very interesting. You can even visit with children without any problem.

The intimate side of history

I enjoyed this visit, even without being a fan of Napoleon Bonaparte (though you do need to have at least a slight interest in history, otherwise the visit won't be very interesting). This is his childhood home, and you can see the rooms where he and his family lived (and even the trapdoor he supposedly used one day to leave the house and head to the continent). It is a beautiful museum, well maintained, with rooms filled with elegant furniture, period documents...

Beautiful place and very informative

Museum located in a large house where Bonaparte actually lived and grew up.
Spacious house with a lot of effort put into showcasing the period furniture, paintings and portraits, and the wall and ceiling decor. Several objects that belonged to Bonaparte or his relatives, and quite a few explanations that help you learn about the life of this historical figure.
Admission price is reasonable, under €10, and not too much of a wait. Heads up, no food or water allowed (maybe only during high security alerts?), and bags are searched thoroughly.
