What to know about Girolata Beach: a quiet haven in the heart of wild Corsica

At the foot of the hamlet of Girolata, the beach of the same name appears. Inaccessible by road, this stretch of sand and small pebbles offers a singular sight. Framed by towering mountains and the turquoise waters of the Scandola Nature Reserve, it is a key stop for those seeking the authentic side of Corsica.

Why visit Girolata Beach?

Girolata Beach is an invitation to unplug. Its isolation, the natural beauty of the setting, and the unique atmosphere of the small village overlooking it make for a special experience. Here, time seems to stand still. Travelers come for the quiet, the water clarity for swimming, and the discovery of a protected site where wild goats sometimes wander freely on the sand.

Arriving by sea: an unforgettable experience

The primary access to Girolata Beach is by sea, which adds a sense of adventure to the trip. Boats, both small and large, dock directly on the shore, providing spectacular views of the gulf. This maritime approach allows you to admire the steep coastline and the intense colors of the volcanic rocks before stepping onto the sand of this sheltered cove.

Pro tip: To avoid the afternoon excursion crowds, plan for a morning visit. You will experience the beach in deeper calm, and the morning light further enhances the colors of the landscape.

Crystal clear water for swimming and snorkeling

The water around Girolata is remarkably transparent, ideal for swimming and exploring the seafloor with a mask and snorkel. The richness of the marine life, protected by the nature reserve status, makes it a small paradise for underwater observation. The feel of the polished pebbles and fine sand underfoot is a distinct pleasure.

The timeless charm of the village of Girolata

In the background of the beach, the hamlet of Girolata, with its small port, its Genoese fort, and a few restaurants, adds to the unique character of the location. It is a fishing village that feels removed from the modern world, where you can wander through the alleys, taste fresh local catches, and observe the famous goats that roam without concern. The vibe is friendly and authentic.

The Fortin de Girolata (Girolata Fort), modest but historic, serves as a testament to the defensive past of Corsica against invasions. It offers an unobstructed view of the gulf and the beach, a panorama that captures the very essence of this wild and beautiful coast.

A pristine spot

Girolata is one of those magical places in Corsica. It is not the most accessible, that is for sure. However, it is better if it stays that way. Plus, it makes the discovery even more spectacular! This isolated village is only accessible by boat (from most tourist ports) or by hiking. I found the landscapes breathtaking and I recommend you go there at least once.
