Between its historic ruins and idyllic beaches, Corfu is one of the largest islands in Greece and easily among the most popular. With the Ionian Sea as a backdrop, exceptional scenery is everywhere. Yet, one view has become globally recognized as the island's aesthetic signature. The Panagia Vlahernon Church, perched directly on the water, has become a staple of Corfu and is surely its most photographed landmark.

Two legendary churches on the water

South of Corfu city, the Kanoni peninsula is a small gem that takes its name from the cannons left behind by Napoleon's troops. Upon arrival, the Panagia Vlahernon Church dominates the view. It appears to float on the sea at the end of a stone causeway where a few small boats are typically moored. Every travel guide features it, and its white walls, punctuated by a lone tree, occupy the entire islet. From the end of the 18th century until 1980, the site functioned as a monastery. Today, only Panagia Vlahernon Church is used for services and celebrations. Open to visitors, it is a place of quiet reflection with a distinct atmosphere. The building features a bell tower and is surrounded by a tiny stone courtyard that offers remarkable views, creating the persistent sensation of walking into a painting. Further out, on an islet accessible only by boat, Pantokrator Church stands out among dense trees on Pontikonissi island.

According to legend, this island is the ship of Odysseus, petrified and turned into rock by Poseidon in a fit of rage. Its only building is a Byzantine chapel dating back to the 11th or 12th century. Both sites are iconic to Corfu. The proximity of the airport does slightly dampen the magic of these two churches, which are otherwise unlike anything else in the world.
