The castle where Joan of Arc identified her king
In March 1429, a seventeen-year-old peasant girl walked through the great hall of the royal residence to face a crowd of courtiers. Without ever having seen him, she identified the true Charles VII hidden among them. The scene played out right here, between these walls of white tufa stone built on a rocky spur overlooking the Vienne river.
Why visit Chinon Castle?
The site is not a single castle but a cluster of three interconnected fortresses, built and modified from the 11th to the 15th century: the fort Saint-Georges, the chateau du Milieu (middle castle), and the fort du Coudray. It was a favorite residence of the Plantagenets, most notably Henry II who died here in 1189, before the fortress became a pillar of Capetian power.
This dual identity, first Anglo-Norman and then French, is what makes the visit compelling. You can read the history of the Hundred Years War directly in the stonework, without any heavy-handed museum displays.
What to look for on site
The logis royal (royal residence) houses the room where Joan of Arc met the dauphin, now presented with an understated audiovisual setup that avoids feeling kitschy. The tour de l'Horloge (Clock Tower) retains a carillon with a mechanism dating to the 15th century and offers an unobstructed view of the rooftops in the lower town.
Do not miss the remnants of the fort du Coudray, where graffiti attributed to Knights Templar imprisoned by order of Philip the Fair remains visible on the tower stones.
The ramparts and the view of the Vienne
Walking along the curtain walls is arguably the highlight of the visit. From the heights, your gaze drops over the slate roofs of Chinon, the medieval bridge, and the winding river. At dusk, the low-angled light carves out the tufa facades in a nearly golden hue.
Insider tip: aim for a late afternoon visit outside of peak tourist season. The light on the ramparts is better, and the crowds are significantly thinner than in the morning.

Chinon Castle is open every day of the year, except for January 1st and December 25th. The ticket office closes 45 minutes before the site closes.
How long for this activity
Allow about 2 hours to explore the entire fortress complex and take in the views of Chinon. Plan for half a day if you want to stroll through the gardens and spend more time with the historical exhibits.

This castle, or rather fortress, offers a superb view of the city and the surrounding area. The visit is very informative. In fact, you can visit absolutely every room. Everything is open to the public. I found the entrance price quite affordable compared to some other Loire Valley castles. Take the opportunity to walk around town afterward.
