Visiting Mysore Zoo, one of the first zoos in India
A century-old institution
The Mysore Zoo, officially named Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, was established in 1892. It is one of the oldest and most respected facilities in India. Located near the Mysore Palace, it spans over 60 hectares and houses a wide variety of animals. It is noted for its well-maintained grounds and spacious enclosures that provide quality living conditions for the wildlife.
Animals to see
The zoo hosts more than 150 species, including some that are rarely seen elsewhere in India. You can observe white tigers, giraffes, Asian elephants, and several species of primates. It is also known for its conservation program for vultures and big cats. The bird section is particularly extensive, featuring exotic parrots, flamingos, and hornbills.
Practical information
A visit to the zoo typically takes 3 to 4 hours. Electric cart rentals are available for those who prefer not to walk long distances. Information signs are provided in English and Kannada. It is recommended to arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds and catch the animals when they are most active.
I visited the Mysore Zoo by chance, and I found it very beautiful and well-maintained. The animals seem healthy and well-treated. You can discover local species, typical of India, that we do not have back home. If you do not know what to do, I recommend you take a trip there.
