What to know about the Port of Bari
Anchored by landmarks like the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and the Swabian Castle, Bari is a major draw for travelers. Bathed in the Mediterranean climate typical of Apulia, the region for which it serves as the capital, this historic hub on the southern coast of Italy has always been a center for maritime trade. Port activity has remained intense for centuries, and today the Port of Bari, one of the busiest on the Adriatic Sea, remains a critical player. It is frequently described as the gateway from Europe to the Balkans and the Middle East. In a city that balances modern districts with a dense historic core, the old port offers a more authentic, quieter alternative to the industrial bustle.
Two ports with distinct vibes
Located to the north of the city, Bari Porto handles passenger arrivals and departures around the clock. Cruise ships and ferries transit through here constantly, connecting to Greece, Albania, Montenegro, and Zakynthos. Activity is high, with as many as fifteen daily departures during peak season. Many travelers use the port as a jumping-off point to explore the Ionian Islands, with regular ferries to Corfu, Sami, and Zakynthos. It is ideally situated just minutes from the city center. The only downside is its popularity, as lines can be slow during busy periods. Just a short walk away through Bari Vecchia (the historic center), you will find a completely different atmosphere at the old port, where the pace is set for strolling. This is where small fishing boats and vessels under nine meters occupy the Saint-Antoine and Saint-Nicolas piers. These two docks have a distinct character, and one of them hosts a local fish and seafood market. The Margherita theater, with its columns planted directly in the sea, is a local highlight, making a walk around the old port one of the simple pleasures of the city.

This port is convenient for traveling around the Mediterranean, but it is by no means a beautiful place to walk around. The atmosphere is intense with a crowd of travelers. I find it hard to get my bearings. It is not very well organized.
