Lake Bled, a living postcard of the Slovenian Alps

The water is an almost unreal shade of turquoise. Floating on this liquid mirror is a tiny island crowned by a white bell tower. Above it, a medieval castle grips a vertical cliff. This image, which seems pulled from a fairytale, is very real and sits less than an hour from Ljubljana.

Why visit Lake Bled?

This glacial lake is 2 km long and contains the only natural island in Slovenia. It is a point of national pride, and Austro-Hungarian aristocrats were already coming here to rest in the 19th century. Swimming is pleasant in the summer, with water temperatures reaching 25 degrees C (77 degrees F) in July.

Let us be clear, Lake Bled draws significant crowds from June through August. The lines for boats grow long and parking lots overflow. May and September offer the best trade-off between mild weather and manageable visitor numbers.

Pletna, the gondolas of the Alps

Since the 16th century, wooden boats with colorful awnings have transported visitors to the island. The pletna are operated by rowers standing up, a trade passed down through families since 1740. Only 23 licenses exist, originally granted by Empress Maria Theresa to the residents of the village of Mlino.

The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Once you land, 99 stone steps lead to the Church of the Assumption. Inside, a bell waits for you to pull its rope three times while making a wish. Legend has it that a widow had her jewelry melted down to cast the bell in memory of her late husband.

Pro tip: Rent a rowboat instead at the kiosk located on the west side of the lake. For a price similar to the pletna, you will navigate at your own pace and can choose your own stops.

Views worth the climb

Mala Osojnica

This overlook at 685 m (2,247 ft) in altitude offers the most photographed view of the lake. The trail starts near the campground on the west side. Expect a 25 minute steady climb. Arrive at sunrise to avoid the rush and catch the golden light hitting the island.

Bled Castle

Perched on its cliff 130 m (426 ft) above the water, this castle has been documented since the year 1011. The panorama from the terrace is impressive, but the paid entry leads to a museum that is not particularly engaging. If you are going only for the view, know that the outer ramparts are accessible for free.

Kremna rezina, a mandatory treat

This mille-feuille of puff pastry, custard, and whipped cream was born under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Standard portions measure 7 cm by 7 cm and 5 cm high, a perfect caloric boost after a hike. The Park Hotel, located on the lakeshore, claims the original recipe.

Around the lake on foot or by bike

The path circling the lake is 6 km (3.7 miles) long. Budget 1.5 hours for a leisurely walk, or longer if you take frequent photo breaks. Bicycles are easily rented in town. Just 4 km (2.5 miles) to the north, the Vintgar Gorge extends the trip along wooden walkways suspended above an emerald river.

Gorgeous

If you are visiting Ljubljana, I highly recommend heading over to Lake Bled. You can get there by train pretty easily. The place is truly magnificent. It feels like being in a real postcard. It is possible to go on a boat cruise on the lake. Just a heads up, it can get really crowded.
