Visiting Chartres Cathedral
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 as one of the very first monuments recognized, the Gothic Chartres Cathedral stands as the most representative and best-preserved example of this architectural style. Construction began in 1194, and the majority of the structure was completed by 1220 by an unknown architect. On February 27, 1594, Henry IV was crowned King of France within these walls. This pivotal site in French history offers a space for family visits filled with culture and exploration.
You can't miss this cathedral if you are passing through Chartres. For me, it is one of the most beautiful in France. The facade, with its two asymmetrical towers and richly ornate portals, is very impressive. But it is the interior decoration that I liked the best. The stained glass windows, mostly original, as well as the choir enclosure, which is brilliantly white and finely sculpted, are truly sumptuous. Don't miss the small Stained Glass Museum, located right next door.
