Butterfly House: 700 colorful wings just 25 miles from Paris

At 82°F with 80% humidity, the air wraps around you the moment you step through the door. Light filters through banana leaves and orchids. A blue morpho flits past you, its electric wings catching the light like a living stained-glass window. Welcome to the largest butterfly greenhouse in France.

Why visit the Butterfly House?

Created in 1989 by Monsieur Poullain, owner of the garden center of the same name, this butterfly sanctuary was the first in France to house exotic lepidoptera in a semi-free environment. The concept clicked. With 60,000 visitors annually, it ranks among the ten most popular sites in the Yvelines region. Its location within the Parc naturel régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse (High Chevreuse Valley Regional Natural Park) adds to its appeal for families from the Paris area looking for a nature escape reachable by local train.

Unlike traditional vivariums where you observe animals behind glass, here the butterflies fly around you. They land on flowers, and sometimes on your shoulder. This proximity changes the experience entirely.

What to expect inside

A recreated equatorial jungle

The 7,750 square-foot greenhouse replicates the climatic conditions of tropical forests in South America, Asia, and Africa. The plants are not just for show. Hibiscus, lantanas, and passion flowers provide the nectar butterflies need to feed. Ripe bananas round out their diet. You will also run into Chinese painted quails scurrying on the ground. Their job is to eliminate aphids and parasites without relying on pesticides.

Species to look for

Around 700 butterflies from dozens of species populate the greenhouse. The most spectacular is the blue morpho, native to Central America, with its 6 to 8 inch wingspan and metallic sheen. Keep an eye out for the owl butterfly, recognizable by the eyespots on its wings that mimic raptor eyes to discourage predators. Chrysalises arrive every week from the Philippines, Costa Rica, and French Guiana, hatching right before your eyes in the three glass-walled nurseries.

Friendly tip: Butterflies are more active in the morning and on overcast days. On very sunny days, direct light hits the glass roof and makes them more reclusive.

The luminescent garden

For the past few years, a new space has extended the visit. Developed with Aglaé, a specialist in bioluminescence, this plant garden immerses visitors in darkness. The plants reflect light based on a natural principle that researchers are considering using to light the cities of tomorrow. The atmosphere evokes the forests of the film Avatar. The contrast with the main greenhouse is striking.

Who is this visit for?

Children love the interactive aspect and the bright colors. An educational path explains the life cycle of butterflies, from caterpillar to imago. Themed workshops are offered on weekends by reservation, including building an attractive planter or observing metamorphoses. The greenhouse also hosts birthday parties and school groups.

Amateur photographers find it an ideal training ground for macro photography. The uniform light simplifies settings, even if artistic bokehs require a bit of creativity. Plan for 1 to 1.5 hours to fully enjoy the experience. Finish at the shop, which offers souvenirs, educational games, and a small snack area.

Opening hours

Open daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, from mid-February through the end of November. Last entry is at 5:00 PM. Closed from December through mid-February.

A bit small but a great little spot for biodiversity

The Butterfly House is pretty small. If you rush, you can get through it in 20 minutes. Though, it would be a shame to rush the visit. There are a lot of tropical butterfly species to see, along with plants, flowers, and trees (even fruit trees like banana and guava trees).
The butterflies vary a lot in size, and some are really big. They come in all sorts of colors, too. If you are lucky, some might even land on you. I heard there are little quail living in the greenhouse, but we didn't see them. There is also a small pond where piranhas live, so watch out :)

The atmosphere in the greenhouse is kept at a constant 82°F (28°C) with 80% humidity, so plan on wearing something light!
On your way out, you can see an active beehive behind glass (no risk of getting stung), as well as insects and arachnids in frames. You will see huge stick insects, beetles, tarantulas, and some scary-looking scorpions. Impressive.
Finally, a short video explains how the greenhouse is maintained and how the butterflies are raised.
