Visiting the Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial is a primary stop when you visit the capital of the United States. Its frequent appearances in film have earned it international fame, and it currently draws more than 6 million visitors each year.

Construction began in 1915 within West Potomac Park and finished in 1922. This memorial was erected to honor Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States and the man who abolished slavery in the country.

The 20-foot statue depicts President Lincoln seated on his chair, gazing eternally toward the obelisk in Washington. It was crafted by Daniel Chester French, an American sculptor who created this piece from limestone. The structure behind the statue draws heavily from the design of Greek temples with its fluted columns. It is separated into 3 sections, divided into decorated chambers that house murals highlighting the values defended by Lincoln.

A Date with History

This building hosted a defining moment in history when Martin Luther King Jr. took the stage for a speech that remains in the national memory. It was here that the famous "I have a dream" speech was delivered before more than 200,000 people. More recently, in 2009, Barack Obama delivered his pre-inaugural address here.

Free Access

The memorial can be visited free of charge at any hour of the day or night, though this site is worth exploring with one of the ranger-led talks offered from 9:30 AM to 10:30 PM. It is also known for its lighting after dark, which keeps it visible from miles away.

For a large portion of the American public, this is a significant site filled with history and symbols.

Once you have finished your visit, consider a walk through West Potomac Park along the water. It is a scenic stroll that serves as an excellent way to round out your day.

I have a dream

The building itself reminds you of a Greek temple. Inside, you will find a statue of Abraham Lincoln, the former American president.
The United States owes him, among other things, the abolition of slavery.
It is at this spot that Martin Luther King delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech, a message of peace and living together.
