Visiting the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington was established as the National Air Museum on August 12, 1946. It adopted its current name in 1976. As the collection outgrew its space, an annex was created in 2003 with the opening of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
The collection at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is significant, housing the largest assembly of aircraft and spacecraft in the world. You will find more than 60,000 objects, including a vast array of flying machines. Airplanes, rockets, missiles, helicopters, and drones are displayed together in a singular exhibition that chronicles the history of human flight.
Traveling through time
As you begin your tour of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, you realize you are moving through history and technological evolution. The visitor path is designed to guide you from the early gliders of the past to the latest drone models.
You will start with the Lilienthal glider and the Wright brothers' aircraft, then travel through the aviation history of the First and Second World Wars, the first supersonic jets, the conquest of space, and finally reach the most modern combat drones. It is a comprehensive journey through our history of conquering the skies and the stars.
Armament
Naturally, you will find numerous combat aircraft, as well as a wide array of military drones and missiles. You can see the German V1 and V2 rockets from the 1940s, alongside recent Russian and American missiles.
