Visiting St. Stephen's Cathedral

St. Stephen's Cathedral, located in the heart of Vienna, stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Austrian capital. Known locally as "Stephansdom," this Gothic cathedral draws visitors for its intricate architecture, deep historical significance, and panoramic views.

Fascinating Architecture

Construction began in the 12th century, resulting in a structure that blends Romanesque and Gothic styles. The exterior is defined by its 136-meter south tower, which provides a vantage point over the city, and a roof covered in colorful ceramic tiles featuring geometric patterns and the double-headed eagle of the Austrian Empire. Inside, the cathedral houses artistic treasures including altars, sculptures, and notable stained glass.

A Deep Dive into History

Stephansdom has played a central role in the history of Vienna and Austria. As a site for coronations, royal weddings, and funerals, it embodies the spiritual and cultural heritage of the nation. The imperial crypt contains the tombs of many members of the Habsburg family, granting visitors a direct look at the imperial past.

What to Do During Your Visit

Beyond exploring the main floor of the cathedral, climb the 343 steps leading to the south tower for a panoramic view of Vienna. If the stairs feel like too much of a workout, an elevator is available. Guided tours offer insight into the history of the monument. You can also head down into the catacombs to explore ancient burial chambers. Consider attending concerts or mass to experience the acoustics in this majestic setting.

Great concerts!

Beyond being a very beautiful Gothic-style cathedral, it is also a place famous for its acoustics. So, calling all concert lovers, especially those who enjoy organ concerts. It is obviously very crowded since it is right in the heart of the capital.

A must-see landmark

This extraordinary Gothic building blew me away every time I walked by. Its sheer scale, the roof decorated with glazed tiles, and the spire make the approach to the monument magnificent. On the other hand, the interior of the cathedral is more ordinary and did not amaze me. I still paid to take the elevator up to the North Tower. This visit is worth it because it lets you see the giant bell and offers a nice view of the city.

A cathedral with a unique roof

It is a Gothic cathedral similar to many others you see in Europe, but its roof makes it special. There is a pattern designed with tiles of different colors. In some places, it looks like an anaconda skin! In others, you can see the eagle, the emblem of the Austrian empire. Part of the interior is free to visit, so do not miss out on that.

For a fee, you can walk up the 343 steps of the south tower, which stands over 130 meters tall. You can also take the elevator to go up to the north tower terrace. It is not as high (68m), but it houses the Pummerin, the largest bell in Austria. To be honest, you will barely see it because the bell tower is inside the structure and you will be outside. On the other hand, you will get a nice view of the city.

Finally, you can also pay to take a guided tour of the catacombs, in English, scheduled once an hour I believe. It is interesting. You will see the episcopal vault where archbishops and cardinals are buried, the ducal vault where a few Habsburgs are buried, and others simply have their viscera contained in urns. Another part contains piles of bones from victims of the 18th century plague. Not something to do with small children.

One last comment on the cathedral: for a monument that is supposed to be iconic to Vienna, I find it rather poorly maintained. Some facades are completely black with grime, and small structures are attached to the building. I did not really understand if they were temporary or permanent. Anyway, in short, it is clearly less well preserved and showcased than other monuments in the city.
