Visiting the Rialto Bridge

Located on the Grand Canal at its narrowest point, just 157 feet wide, in the city of Venice, the Rialto Bridge remains a central fixture of the city. As the oldest and most famous bridge, dating back to the 14th century, it takes its name from the surrounding district and connects the sestieri (neighborhoods) of San Polo on the right bank and San Marco on the left bank.

The first bridge across the Grand Canal

For a long time, this was the only way for Venetians to cross the Grand Canal. Three other bridges have since been built, the Accademia Bridge, the Scalzi Bridge, and the Constitution Bridge. Once the site of the Rialto exchange, the bridge played a key role in the growth of the Venetian merchant fleet and the local naval arsenal. Following a collapse in 1444, it was rebuilt first in wood and then in Istrian stone, gaining two rows of retail galleries. It represents an architectural feat by Antonio Da Ponte, who won the design competition against heavyweights like Michelangelo, Sansovino, and Palladio. Its single arch, standing 24 feet high, rests on a foundation of 12,000 wooden piles. The structure is delicate, and in 2011, it suffered a partial collapse that damaged 14 columns supporting the balustrade. Restoration work, estimated at 5 to 7 million EUR (about $5.4 to $7.6 million), was funded by the clothing brand Diesel in exchange for advertising space.

A place to shop

Over time, the goldsmiths have given way to souvenir shops. Since the bridge is crowded with the millions of tourists visiting Venice, try to arrive in the early morning or at night. From Monday to Saturday, between 5:00 AM and 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM, the nearby market hosts fish and produce vendors.

Passing under the Rialto Bridge in a gondola provides a different perspective that is worth experiencing.

Venice in all its splendor, but...

Visiting and discovering Venice as a couple, especially when your wife is pregnant with your first child, believe me, it is priceless. I was impatient to get up on the Rialto Bridge, and I was not disappointed by the superb view that was offered to me. I do regret the large number of tourists, however, and even more so the number of souvenir shops. Not very authentic feeling. I admit I preferred getting lost in the streets of Venice rather than lingering in the Rialto neighborhood, which I still recommend visiting once in your life.

Worth seeing but super crowded

I was really looking forward to seeing the famous Rialto Bridge, and I was clearly not the only one. While this bridge is a must-see during your trip to Venice, be prepared for it to be very crowded. Crossing it requires a bit of patience, especially if you don't like crowds. It is impossible to linger or take nice photos, which is a bit of a shame.

Landmark

The bridge itself didn't really leave much of an impression on me. It is still interesting to see what old-fashioned bridges looked like, back when they were lined with shops of all kinds.
Easily recognizable, it will serve as a landmark for you in the maze of Venetian alleys.

Shops, and more shops

For me, the Rialto Bridge is associated with exhaustion. It was after getting lost and wandering for a good two hours in the alleys that I stumbled upon this bridge, completely by chance. It was a bit like an oasis in the middle of a desert, and as soon as I spotted it, I knew I would find my way back. So sure, I was wiped out and I couldn't feel my legs anymore, but I was so relieved. It is not strictly speaking an ideal place to take a break, as there are a lot of tourists and especially a lot of charming shops (mostly accessories), but you will always find a little corner to settle into with a view of the water.

Iconic

The Rialto Bridge in Venice is just iconic. Sure, it is big, and the steps are small too. But it is definitely not the most beautiful bridge I have ever admired...
However, it is the Rialto, the one you see in movies, and the one you cannot miss if you come to Venice...

The bridge of disappointment

This bridge is impressive in its size. I was a little disappointed by such a well-known monument. When you walk across the bridge, you realize that there is graffiti almost everywhere. It kind of ruins the myth. On top of that, since there are so many people, it is hard to stay for a moment to get some good photos.
