Valentino Castle, a royal residence on the banks of the Po

On the left bank of the Po, set within the most popular park in Turin, stands a facade of turrets and slate roofs that looks entirely out of place in northern Italy. Valentino Castle feels more like a Loire Valley manor than a Piedmontese palace, and that is no coincidence.

Why visit Valentino Castle?

The current structure was heavily renovated in the 17th century for Christine of France, daughter of Henry IV and wife of Duke of Savoy Victor Amadeus I. She brought in architects steeped in French tradition, which explains the building's distinct silhouette: a horseshoe plan, ornate dormer windows, and steeply pitched roofs. It is a piece of France planted on the banks of the Po.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 as part of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, the castle now houses the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Torino. It is precisely this status as an active university that makes a visit a bit unusual.

What you can actually see

Access to the castle is limited. The interiors are occupied by university departments and are not open for casual tours. Open house events are held occasionally, most notably during the Giornate FAI (Italian Environment Fund) days, which allow visitors to explore the interior rooms, including the remarkable Sala delle Quattro Stagioni with its 17th-century frescoes.

Outside of these events, your visit will be limited to the exterior: the park-facing facade, the French-style gardens, and especially the path along the Po, which offers the best vantage point of the entire building.

Pro tip: If you are visiting Turin in the spring (usually March or April), check the Giornate FAI schedule on the official FAI website. It is one of the rare times when the interior rooms of the castle are open to the public, either for free or for a nominal donation.

Parco del Valentino, the heart of the estate

The Parco del Valentino surrounding the castle is a destination in its own right. Its paths stretch for miles along the river, and just a few minutes away on foot is the Borgo Medievale, a reconstruction of a Piedmontese medieval village built for the 1884 World Expo, which makes for a logical follow-up to your visit.

Ideal for

  • An architectural walk along the Po
  • Fans of Savoyard heritage and French influence in Italy
  • Combining with the Borgo Medievale and the park for a half-day outing

Less suitable if

  • You want to visit richly furnished interiors (inaccessible outside of specific events)
  • You are looking for a standard guided tour with a permanent ticket office

Opening hours

Valentino Castle, located in the heart of Parco del Valentino (Valentino Park) in Turin, now houses the architecture faculty of the Politecnico di Torino (Polytechnic University of Turin). Because of its academic function, interior access is strictly limited.

The historic rooms are not open for self-guided public tours. Occasional openings occur during specific events or open house days, with dates announced on the official website of the Ateneo (University).

If you cannot visit the interior, enjoy the monumental facade facing the Po River and the surrounding gardens, which are open daily without time restrictions.

How long for this activity

Plan on 30 to 45 minutes to admire the exterior architecture and stroll through the adjacent gardens. Since interior access is not possible outside of special events, this amount of time is plenty to experience the site.

Magnificent architecture

This castle has magnificent architecture. Today, it houses several schools. You can admire the exterior freely, but the interior can only be seen during guided tours which generally take place on Saturday mornings. You should check if that is still the case. For my part, I really liked it.
