Téléphérique du Mont Faron à Toulon

Visiting Mont Faron

The city of Toulon, located in the Var department, is overlooked by a modest peak reaching an elevation of 584 meters (1,916 feet). While the height might not seem significant, the mountain features a 17th-century network of fortifications that makes the climb worthwhile.

History

Mont Faron has been inhabited since the Neolithic era, a time when local groups sought refuge in its limestone caves.

During the Roman Empire, one of two imperial dye works was established here. The local bay was home to murex, a type of sea snail used to produce a rare and incredibly expensive purple dye. At the time, poaching these mollusks was a crime punishable by death.

By the Middle Ages, Mont Faron developed another dyeing industry based on kermes, a type of scale insect whose eggs were used to create a vermilion pigment. However, the discovery of the New World and the more prolific, cost-effective cactus cochineal led to a slow decline for these local industries.

Neglect, grazing goat herds, abandoned dye works, and frequent fires led to the total desertification of Mont Faron by the early 16th century.

It was not until the mid-19th century that a reforestation policy was finally implemented, placing the area under the authority of the national forestry service.

Mont Faron Today

Today, the site is entirely focused on tourism. Inaugurated in 1959, a cable car is available to transport you from Toulon directly to the summit.

At the top, you can visit the Zoo du mont Faron (Mont Faron Zoo), founded in 1968 and specialized in big cats. Nearby, you will find the Mémorial du débarquement et de la libération de Provence (Memorial of the Landing and Liberation of Provence). It serves as a significant site of history and remembrance.

Naturally, the area is a favorite for cyclists, hikers, rock climbers, and spelunkers. It offers opportunities for outdoor activities throughout the year.

When you add in the unobstructed view over the city of Toulon, it would be a shame to miss such a scenic excursion.

Get a bird's eye view

Mont Faron is the highest point in the Toulon metropolitan area.
To get there, you have the choice between a scenic road and the cable car.
The ride up in the cable car is an experience you shouldn't miss during a stay in Toulon!
The highlight of exploring the Faron site is definitely the majestic view over the harbor and its surroundings.
On the other hand, avoid the Faron zoo, a shameful place for the welfare of the animals (the cage space is way too small).

A magnificent ascent

I am not a big fan of Toulon, but if there is one thing to do in the city, it is definitely Mont Faron. Accessible in five minutes by cable car, it offers a gorgeous view of the entire coast. In addition to the panorama, the summit has two points of interest: a very immersive memorial that transported me into the Second World War and the Fauverie, a small center featuring big cats that raises awareness about protecting these animals. An absolute must-do.

A beautiful natural site in Toulon

Toulon is a concrete city, without any particularly remarkable spots. With the exception of this cable car ride. It is really one of the things that helps it stand out. An original activity in the region, it offers a beautiful viewpoint over nature and the bay. It is a great way to see the city from a different perspective!

Heads up, there is sometimes a wait, so it is better to check in advance.

Nice spot for some fresh air

Not far from the center of Toulon, this small mountain covered in forest and scrubland, which hosts a small zoo for big cats at its summit, gives you the chance to get some fresh air.
You can make the climb by car, by cable car, or on foot if you are the athletic type. Very nice walk, with a view overlooking Toulon and its bay.
