Visiting Santa Monica Pier: The California icon where land meets the ocean

More than just a pier, the Santa Monica Pier is a true institution, a symbol of the American West Coast planted at the end of the legendary Route 66. People come here for the sound of waves crashing under the wooden planks, the scent of cotton candy and popcorn, and that specific golden California light that sets the Pacific ablaze at sunset.

Why is the Santa Monica Pier an unforgettable experience?

Built in 1909, this historic pier has endured through the decades to become much more than a fishing destination. It is a cultural landmark, designated a national historic monument, where the fun of yesterday meets the energy of today. Walking its boards means stepping across more than a century of history and popular entertainment.

Pacific Park: Thrills above the waves

The main event is undoubtedly Pacific Park, the only amusement park on the West Coast located on a pier. The experience is unique, with your feet dangling over the ocean.

The Pacific Wheel

The signature of the park, the Pacific Wheel, is the world's first and only solar-powered Ferris wheel. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of Santa Monica Bay, the coastline from Malibu to Palos Verdes, and the sprawling lights of Los Angeles.

Roller coasters and arcade games

For thrill-seekers, the West Coaster offers a roller coaster ride more than 50 feet above the waves. Nearby, the skill games and the Playland arcade, with its vintage machines, stir up a joyful, timeless nostalgia.

Local tip: Arrive about an hour before sunset. Take a ride on the Ferris wheel at the exact moment the sun dips into the ocean. The view is striking and the colors of the sky over the sea create an unforgettable backdrop for photos.

More than an amusement park

The Santa Monica Pier is a microcosm of activities for everyone. You can wander for hours without getting bored. Things to discover include:

  • The historic carousel: Housed in the 1916 Looff Hippodrome, this beautiful carousel with hand-carved wooden horses is a local treasure.
  • Fishing and street performers: At the end of the pier, anglers share space with visitors, while musicians and other street performers provide constant entertainment.
  • Heal the Bay Aquarium: Located right under the carousel, this small aquarium is an excellent educational stop to learn about local marine life.

The final point of the legendary Route 66

An iconic End of the Trail sign officially marks the end of the most famous road in the United States. Taking a photo in front of it is a rite of passage for thousands of travelers from all over the world, a symbolic finish line for a legendary trek across the country.

Opening hours

The Santa Monica Pier is open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Operating hours for Pacific Park, as well as the surrounding shops and restaurants, depend on the season and weather. These businesses are typically open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM or later.

The seaside party

Compared to the athletic Venice, Santa Monica offers a more family-friendly atmosphere. Its beautiful pier, with its boat-shaped lifeguard station, is home to a small amusement park. I recommend the Ferris wheel, the symbol of the place, which gives a very pretty view of Santa Monica.

It is a perfect walk for a few hours. You will take great photos there with the wheel or the Route 66 sign. You enjoy the sea, eat an ice cream, and let yourself be carried away by this soothing and joyful vibe. At sunset, it is magnificent.

The Pacific Park amusement park

This is a totally charming spot right on the Pacific Ocean that you absolutely have to visit during a trip to Los Angeles. Plan to go at the end of the day, after catching a sunset at Venice Beach, which is the neighborhood right nearby. This pier is the symbolic end of Route 66, which crosses the entire United States. It is also an amusement park called "Pacific Park" with all kinds of rides, including a very famous Ferris wheel.
