The sanctuary where the earth itself caught fire
You step into a fortified pentagonal courtyard enclosed by stone walls topped with crenellations. At the center, an altar maintains a continuous flame, surrounded by twenty-four cells once occupied by pilgrims.
The location owes its existence to a geological quirk: the Absheron peninsula brims with natural gas, capable of bubbling up spontaneously from the ground and igniting upon contact with the air.
Why visit Ateshgah
The building you tour today was constructed starting in the 15th and 17th centuries by Hindu merchants who settled on the peninsula along trading caravan routes. The 18th century added oratories, cells, and a caravanserai, before the central altar temple, the newest part of the complex, was erected in 1810 with the backing of merchant Kanchangar.
The site drew renowned travelers, including the writer Alexandre Dumas in the 19th century, who witnessed those flames the earth produced back then without human intervention.
Inscriptions from India
On the walls of the temple, you can examine twenty-three engraved inscriptions: eighteen in Devanagari, two in Gurmukhi, two in Landa, and a single one in Persian. The symbol of the Hindu swastika appears in six of them, tangible traces of the Zoroastrian, Hindu, and Sikh traditions that crossed paths here.
A museum inside the pilgrim cells
The former cells lining the courtyard have been converted into exhibition rooms. Inside, you will find reconstructed scenes with mannequins illustrating the extreme ascetic practices of past fire worshippers, including the custom of lying directly on glowing embers.
The site's natural flame went out in the 20th century, a casualty of intensive oil and gas extraction across the region. The flame you see burning on the altar today is fed by an artificial gas pipeline.

I really enjoyed visiting the fire temple. It is very interesting and lets you discover a new religion. There are many objects that help you better understand the history of the site and its followers. It is a place where a great sense of spirituality reigns.
