Visiting the Guimet Museum, an immersive journey into the heart of Asia
Located in the 16th arrondissement, just steps from the Trocadéro, the Guimet Museum, also known as the musée national des arts asiatiques (National Museum of Asian Arts), houses one of the finest collections of Asian art outside of Asia. Founded in 1889 by the industrialist Émile Guimet from Lyon, the museum offers an exploration of artistic and cultural history spanning several millennia across the Asian continent.
A rich and varied collection
The museum holds an exceptional selection of works from East and Southeast Asia, including pieces from China, Japan, India, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Among the highlights are the intricate Buddhist sculptures from Cambodia and India, along with delicate porcelains and Japanese woodblock prints. The museum also features a gallery dedicated to the arts of Korea, which are less widely recognized but equally refined.
With a collection totaling over 45,000 pieces, the museum provides a comprehensive cultural experience for both seasoned art historians and casual visitors.
Temporary exhibitions and events
Beyond its permanent collection, the Guimet Museum hosts a rotating schedule of temporary exhibitions that dive into specific themes, ensuring there is always something new to see. Conferences, workshops, and film screenings are frequently organized to help visitors better understand the nuances of Asian cultures. These activities provide a deeper, more active engagement with the civilizations represented.
Elegant architecture and a serene atmosphere
The building itself is worth a visit. Constructed in a restrained yet elegant neoclassical style, it features bright and calming spaces that are ideal for viewing the fine details of the exhibits. A Zen garden rounds out the experience, offering a quiet retreat in the middle of Paris. This peaceful environment encourages the kind of contemplation and reflection central to the Asian philosophies highlighted throughout the museum collections.

The Guimet Museum is a very specific museum in Paris since it is exclusively dedicated to Asian arts. In all, more than 60,000 works are displayed over 5,500 square meters. I had the chance to discover it for Heritage Days in September. I loved its little, well-hidden zen garden. It is a very beautiful museum but not necessarily adapted for the general public. I particularly liked the Khmer collection from Angkor as well as the section dedicated to Japanese art, with samurai swords.
