Visiting the Aquarium de Paris
The Aquarium de Paris is a favorite for those interested in marine life. Located in the heart of Paris, tucked into the Jardins du Trocadéro (Trocadéro Gardens) right across from the Eiffel Tower, this site is one of the oldest aquariums in the world. It balances education, conservation, and entertainment, making it a top pick for family outings in Paris.
An historic aquarium, updated for the modern era
Founded in 1867, the Aquarium de Paris underwent a massive renovation in 2006. Today, it spans over 3,500 square meters and houses more than 10,000 specimens representing 500 different species. Visitors can walk through various marine ecosystems, ranging from local French freshwater and saltwater environments to tropical coral reefs.
The shark tank experience
The main attraction is a tank holding 3 million liters of water, home to sharks, rays, and a variety of tropical fish. A transparent tunnel allows you to walk through the enclosure, providing a 360-degree view of the underwater world. The aquarium also hosts daily events, including feeding sessions and educational presentations.
A commitment to conservation and education
Beyond its exhibits, the Aquarium de Paris focuses on conservation and education. It manages research programs and actively participates in protecting threatened species. The aquarium hosts educational workshops for children and school groups to build awareness of marine ecosystems. The complex also features two movie theaters showing films and documentaries on marine life to round out the educational experience.
With an on-site restaurant and a gift shop, the Aquarium de Paris provides a complete experience that blends study, recreation, and a close look at marine life in the middle of the French capital.

Right in the heart of the Trocadéro gardens, this nice aquarium with a kind of sad-looking entrance houses way more species than you would think. The layout, organized by geographic zones, is very easy to follow and takes you on a real odyssey of the marine world. It was the big shark tank, with the underwater cave, that impressed my nieces the most, but for me, I love the Médusarium. I am always totally hypnotized by that little round room where you are surrounded in the dark by a bunch of floating jellyfish.
Plan on a good two hours for the visit. Pro tip, if you book online for a specific day and time, you can get a discounted rate.
