Visiting the Cluny Museum, a dive into medieval Paris
Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter, the Cluny Museum, officially known as the Musée national du Moyen Âge (National Museum of the Middle Ages), offers a unique look at over a thousand years of history. Housed in a building rich with heritage, it combines Gallo-Roman ruins with flamboyant Gothic architecture.
A site steeped in history
The museum occupies an exceptional site, the former hôtel des abbés de Cluny (Cluny Abbey town house) built in the 15th century, attached to the ruins of the thermes gallo-romains de Lutèce (Gallo-Roman baths of Lutetia). This rare complex tells a significant part of the history of Paris. You can still visit the frigidarium, a vast vaulted hall dating back to the 1st century. The architecture of the main building, with its turrets, stained glass, and monumental fireplaces, is a draw in its own right.
Iconic and rich collections
The Cluny Museum holds one of the finest collections of medieval art in Europe. Among the most famous pieces is La Dame à la licorne (The Lady and the Unicorn) tapestry, an allegorical cycle of six panels woven at the end of the 15th century. You will also find stained glass from the Sainte-Chapelle, sculptures from Notre-Dame de Paris, and a series of liturgical objects, goldsmith work, and carved ivories. Art history enthusiasts will appreciate the variety and detail of the works on display.
A redesigned layout
Following several years of renovation, the museum reopened in 2022 with a redesigned visitor circuit that is more fluid and educational. The ground floor focuses on ancient and medieval Paris, while the upper floors offer a thematic and chronological exploration of the collections.
A medieval garden, open during warmer months, allows you to extend your visit in a peaceful setting. Temporary exhibitions also fill the program throughout the year.
