Visiting the Tuileries Garden

Located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde (Concorde Square), the Tuileries Garden remains the largest and oldest formal French garden in the country. A favorite spot for locals and travelers to walk and take in culture, it owes its name to the tile factories that occupied the site before a royal residence was built there in 1564. It was Catherine de Medici who commissioned an immense Italian-style garden, complete with a fountain, a menagerie, and the Grotte de Palissy (Palissy Grotto), later adding an orangery and a silkworm nursery. It served as a popular retreat for lavish celebrations. Eventually, Louis XIV ordered his gardener, the famous Andre Le Notre, to redesign the grounds using the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte as his primary inspiration.

The redesign introduced a central alley, reflecting pools, and numerous marble statues, alongside an equestrian ring and other diversions. While the Grand Carre (Large Square) houses 19th-century sculptures, those in the Allee de Diane (Diana's Alley) date back to the 17th century. The two smaller basins are decorated with animal-themed works, while the larger round basin features mythological figures. Among the most notable pieces, do not miss the Mercury and the Fame Riding a Winged Horse by Antoine Coysevox.

The wooded area includes two exedrae, which function as open-air conversation rooms equipped with benches. The grounds are home to 800 trees, some of which are over a century old and reach heights of up to 2.2 meters. You will find various species of oaks, as well as elms, alders, ashes, yews, poplars, lindens, horse chestnuts, plane trees, maples, and white mulberries. In the Grand Carre, you will also spot hackberry trees, Judas trees, purple beeches, horse chestnuts, orange trees, and magnolias. The floral displays are equally impressive, with gardeners planting 7,000 bulbs every year.

Despite the fire that destroyed the palace in 1871, the Tuileries Garden has remained a central part of life in Paris. It hosted the first motor show in 1898. Free guided tours in French are available from March to December, and a fairground is set up during July and August, right at the foot of the Ferris wheel.

Perfect for chilling all afternoon

The Tuileries Garden is one of my favorite places to relax in Paris. Sitting on the green chairs and enjoying the sun is priceless! Its proximity to the Louvre Museum is also a huge plus. You find everything here: people reading, others chatting, or some who, like me, are just happy doing nothing at all.

A popular and lively park

The Tuileries Garden is a very pleasant park for a walk or a rest. Depending on the time of year, you might find yourself right in the middle of a Christmas market or at the heart of a big, lively fair in August. I especially love being able to run into tourists from all walks of life, and it is this diversity that is part of the garden's charm. It remains a very popular spot, however, and is therefore very crowded.

A must-see garden

Very beautiful park right in the center of Paris. It is ideal for taking a walk, reading a book in the sun, or grabbing a coffee at the kiosk. In the summer, there is a funfair, and in the winter, you can find the Christmas market. The park is well maintained and set up with chairs to sit by the fountains. Just remember to check the hours, because the park closes earlier in the winter.

Very lively

The Jardin des Tuileries is one of the largest parks within the city limits of Paris. It is where the fairground or the Christmas market are held. You run into both tourists who have come to visit the Louvre and locals who are having a picnic at the first rays of sunshine. However, it seems less clean and family friendly to me than other smaller and quieter parks in Paris. It still remains a true institution!

Must-see

The Tuileries Garden is one of the must-see spots in Paris. Its central location makes it easy to get to. The site is really pleasant, even if it is often very crowded. It is the perfect place for a stroll and to admire the fountains. It is not just a garden, but a cultural venue in its own right.

Very pleasant

I was lucky enough to go for Easter, and the spring atmosphere was perfect! We could see little ducks, it was adorable! It is really a beautiful park, a green oasis in the capital. The statues and architecture give it a very elegant feel. The perfect place to read by a tree and soak up the sun!

A breath of fresh air in the heart of Paris

Close to the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, the Tuileries Garden is easy to walk through during a visit to the center of Paris. Even though it is not very large, you can enjoy this peaceful space for a nice break near the fountains where little remote-controlled boats sail. Along the way, the garden lets you admire the splendid perspectives of Le Nôtre, remarkable statues, and the majestic Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. It also gives access to the Musée de l’Orangerie, which houses Monet’s sumptuous Water Lilies, which you should not miss, as well as the Olympic flame. Good news, it will be presented every summer, from June 23 to September 14, until the Los Angeles Olympics.

Tuileries Garden, a garden designed like a museum

The gardeners at the Tuileries take their inspiration directly from the temporary exhibitions at the Louvre to design the flower beds. For me, the Tuileries are the heart of Paris. You can find a quiet spot, read a book, have a picnic, feed the ducks, or rent a little wooden boat on the pond near the Concorde. It is a little paradise right in the middle of Paris. You really cannot find a more central meeting place. Just a heads up, the park closes at 7:30 PM in the middle of winter. And of course, there is the funfair in the summer and the Christmas market, though I will admit it gets pretty crowded.

Beautiful setting

Refreshing lawns, statues, fountains, flowers, but above all a splendid setting. The Louvre on one side, the view of the historic axis on the other, with the Arc de Triomphe and La Défense.
Bonus: a fairground with the Ferris wheel, rides, sweets...

This beautiful French-style garden is located right near the Place de la Concorde. You can admire the stunning flowers and sculptures that decorate the grounds. It is an ideal spot to take a little nap under the trees, comfortably settled in a lounge chair! You can also enjoy some delicious ice cream there with friends during the summer.
