Visiting Union Square

In Manhattan, you will find a square bordered by both Broadway and Park Avenue, two of the most famous arteries in New York. As a major crossroads for local life and civic activism, it is a primary destination.

History

Since the mid-19th century, Union Square has served as a site for public debate and assembly. In 1861, following the fall of Fort Sumter to Confederate forces, a massive patriotic demonstration took place here, reaching a scale unprecedented in the country at the time. This solidified its status as a gathering point for decades to follow.

In 1872, the square was redesigned by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. They placed a park at its center and dotted the grounds with statues of notable figures.

During the 1930s, the square became the primary site for labor demonstrations in New York. These rallies were so significant that they ultimately inspired the park's name.

By the 1970s, the area shifted in character to become a space primarily for walking and relaxation.

Union Square

Today, this square remains popular with New Yorkers for several reasons. It hosts one of the oldest farmers markets in the city, with local producers setting up stalls every week since 1976.

While walking through the park, you can view the various statues installed throughout the grounds. You will encounter Lincoln, Gandhi, and even a statue of Lafayette, sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Bartholdi is a familiar name in the city, as he was the artist behind the Statue of Liberty.

During the holiday season, residents flock to the holiday market set up on the square, which has served as a backdrop for numerous films.

This central hub of New York life is also extremely well served by public transit, making it a convenient and accessible meeting point.
