Visiting South Street Seaport

Located just steps from Wall Street and Battery Park, the South Street Seaport neighborhood is a go-to destination for both visitors and locals in New York.

The history of the port

The history of this port dates back to the 18th century, but it truly found its footing in early 1810. Within a few years, a space once reserved strictly for maritime freight filled with shops, bars, and hotels.

During the 20th century, as maritime shipping declined, South Street Seaport faced the threat of demolition. As often happens in New York, a neighborhood association stepped in to save this piece of the city's heritage, successfully engaging developers. By securing landmark status for specific buildings, they ensured these historic structures could not be torn down.

It was only in the 1970s that shops began to move in, primarily on the ground floors of restored buildings. By the 1980s, the area became a pedestrian zone, cementing the success of a location that was already a local favorite.

A nostalgic stroll

Stretching along the cobblestones of Fulton Street, this neighborhood features buildings that are often over a century old and sits right along the East River. From the old port docks, you can walk along the water while taking in an unobstructed view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

A short distance away, you will find the South Street Seaport Museum. Founded in 1967, it showcases several magnificent vintage ships. You can explore tugboats, cargo ships, and sailboats, all of which date from before the 1930s.

Walking these docks is a premier activity in New York. On one side you have the water and sailboats moored at the piers, and on the other, a collection of shops, restaurants, and bars with inviting outdoor seating. It is no surprise that these docks are swarmed by crowds the moment the sun comes out.

Beautiful boats to see

Before visiting New York, I absolutely did not think of this destination as a coastal, port city.

It was a nice surprise to discover this harbor where beautiful sailboats from previous centuries are anchored.
