Visiting the Golden Temple
The Golden Temple is the common name for Harmandir Sahib, the most significant Sikh temple in the world, located in Amritsar within the Punjab region of northern India. Construction began in the 16th century under the guidance of Guru Arjan, the fifth spiritual master of the Sikhs. The structure was unfortunately destroyed following an Afghan invasion in 1758, but it was rebuilt just eight years later.
The heart of the Sikh faith
The Golden Temple serves as the primary pilgrimage site for Sikhs. It houses the Adi Granth, the sacred scripture that compiles the teachings of the various gurus. The temple sits at the center of a sacred pool known as the Amrit Sarovar, or pool of nectar, which was excavated in the 16th century. The building is inlaid with gold, mother of pearl, and precious stones, topped by a gilded dome that symbolizes an inverted lotus.
The complex is surrounded by marble buildings that house key Sikh institutions known as gurdwaras. Every evening, a procession takes place to transport the sacred book from the temple to Sri Akal Takht, the seat of Sikh religious authority located in one of the adjacent buildings.
Stepping into a sacred space
Inside the temple, the atmosphere is defined by intense religious devotion. Sacred hymns, or kirtans, are performed continuously. To enter, visitors must follow a specific protocol: cover your head, remove your shoes, and wash your feet in a footbath to remove impurities. The temple is open to everyone regardless of faith. You can even eat at the langar, a community kitchen run entirely by volunteers, which serves between 60,000 and 80,000 free meals every single day.

This temple is truly superb. I made a detour to this city just to visit it and I do not regret it. From the outside, the facade is stunning. But on the inside, it is above all the spiritual atmosphere that you feel. Everything is peaceful and conducive to reflection. Most of the visitors are believers who have come to pray. I really recommend this visit.
