Visiting Chapultepec Castle

Among the standout landmarks in Mexico City, Chapultepec Castle is a must. This structure dates back to 1735 and served many different purposes before becoming the current National Museum of History.

Its History

Chapultepec Castle was built at the start of the 18th century on the Colline del Chapulín (Grasshopper Hill). This site was not chosen by accident. It is the most visible high point from Mexico City and was a sacred location for the Aztecs. This prestigious position, both near the city center and removed from the noise, made it a preferred retreat for the country's leaders. After independence, Chapultepec Castle was turned into a military college and was the site of a fierce battle between American and Mexican forces in the mid-19th century. After serving as the region's first astronomical observatory, it was selected in 1864 by Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, to serve as their imperial residence. The castle was later favored by various heads of state and their foreign guests before becoming the National Museum of History in 1939.

What to see at Chapultepec Castle?

The exterior architecture of Chapultepec Castle has remained intact for nearly three centuries, but the interior was gradually modified to resemble grand European palaces. Today, you can view period tapestries and paintings as you walk through lavishly decorated rooms and climb marble staircases. Busts of historical figures accompany you through the halls, serving as a reminder of the site's complex past. Right nearby, in the Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Woods), you can continue your cultural tour at the National Museum of Anthropology, one of the most significant museums in the Americas.

A timeless place in the city

During my visit to Chapultepec Castle, I was really surprised by the beauty of the place. The views of Mexico City from the balconies are simply breathtaking, and the gardens offer a calm escape in the middle of the urban hustle and bustle. I especially liked the murals and the historical objects, which tell the history of the country with such force and emotion. After the visit, do not hesitate to walk around the surrounding gardens. It is a peaceful and very pleasant moment.

A peaceful haven in the urban jungle

A very unique place in Mexico City, a colonial-era castle built on a hill surrounded by a lush green garden, where a calming atmosphere reigns, and it feels so good!
There are pretty views of the city from the castle terrace, and you can visit part of its interior. It is interesting, and you learn quite a bit about Mexican history, including the fact that the country was administered by France for a few years!

An interesting retrospective on colonial history

You have to climb Chapultepec hill to visit the Castillo. From there, you get a superb view of the city.

It was the residence of Maximilian of Habsburg from 1864 to 1867, when Napoleon III organized the conquest of Mexico. The dictator Porfirio Díaz also lived there at the beginning of the 20th century. You can visit their apartments.

Unexpected in the center of Mexico City

The castle and the park surrounding it are like a world of their own in the Mexican capital. No cars here, no buildings everywhere you look, no noise. A winding path takes you up a hill to the palace, which you can explore.

What awaits you: murals by Riera, like the one of the teenager diving into the void with the Mexican flag to keep the enemy from getting their hands on it (impressive), and rooms in the castle displaying furniture, decor, and period items.

One of my favorite places in Mexico City.

A palace perched in a lush green setting

In the middle of a crowded, concrete-heavy city, there stands an old royal palace on a small, green hill.

It is a real pleasure to get some fresh air in this park and walk up the path that leads to the castillo. You will find a lovely palace there, with pretty views of the city and huge murals by artists like Diego Rivera.

For a bit of history, the Castillo was under French authority for a few years, but that did not last...
