Old Trafford Stadium

Where to stay near Old Trafford: the 3 areas to know in 2026

The four members who have written to us about Old Trafford all praise the same thing: a club that never moved. The ground grew in pieces, “with no harmony” says one, and what is left, says another, is an old-school charm that is becoming rare. Its stands hold more than 74,000, a record for an English club, and the club has played here for 115 years.

Except that on 11 March 2025 the club unveiled plans for a 100,000-seat ground a few steps from here, for the 2030-31 season. What our members describe therefore has an expiry date, and this page is written for the trips between now and then: sleeping at the foot of the current stands, on the Salford quays, or in central Manchester.

Sir Matt Busby Way, outside the stands At the foot of the ground, in the Wharfside district

For anyone coming for the historic ground, before it changes

The street named after the former manager leads straight to the stands, and it holds the highest-rated address in this guide, a hotel given over entirely to football. The surroundings have nothing else to offer: warehouses, car parks, and the cricket ground 900 metres away, named Old Trafford like its neighbour. You settle here to see the stadium before and after, not for the neighbourhood, and because the club will move within the decade.

you experience a special atmosphere. You can feel that it is an entire community coming together

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Two Old Traffords stand 900 metres apart: The name covers both the football stadium and Emirates Old Trafford, the cricket ground with its own hotel, 900 metres away. Both addresses are excellent, and yet the stands are not the same: check which one your booking means, especially if you arrive late and on foot. The district is no help: warehouses, car parks, and signage that speaks mainly to regulars.
  • This ground is to be replaced, and our members love exactly what will go: On 11 March 2025 the club unveiled plans for a 100,000-seat ground designed by Foster + Partners, a few steps from the current one, for a hoped-for move in 2030-31. Yet what our four members praise is precisely the opposite of a new stadium: stands built in several phases and without harmony, an old-school charm, an atmosphere of football as it used to be. If that is the reason for your trip, the calendar counts as much as the hotel.
  • The ticket weighs more than the room: With us, one member warns bluntly that match tickets are very expensive, and that is the only reproach the experience draws from them. Another qualifies the atmosphere: it is good-natured, and he expected more noise given the size of the ground. Practical conclusion: settle the ticket first, choose the room second, and count the journey from the centre rather than paying a premium for proximity.
Where not to stay near Old Trafford
  • Booking at the foot of the stadium hoping for a neighbourhood: these are warehouses and car parks, and life is held in the centre.
  • Confusing the two Old Traffords: the cricket ground carries the same name and stands 900 metres away.
  • Leaving a big match to the last minute: our members report very expensive tickets, and the stadium addresses are few.

FAQ: where to stay near Old Trafford

Sleep near Old Trafford or in central Manchester?
Near the stadium if it is the old ground you are coming to see: Sir Matt Busby Way leads to the stands and carries the highest score in this guide, while the surroundings stay bare. In the centre if Manchester counts just as much: Piccadilly station is 5.3 kilometres away, the choice of hotels is far wider, and the Etihad, the city's other ground, stands 7.7 kilometres off.
How many seats does Old Trafford hold?
A little over 74,000, and no English club ground holds as many. The club has played here for 115 years and expanded it in stages, hence the look our members describe: stands built in several phases, without harmony, but an atmosphere of football as it used to be.
Is the club going to leave Old Trafford?
Plans for a new 100,000-seat ground designed by Foster + Partners were unveiled on 11 March 2025, for a site a few steps from the current one and a hoped-for move during the 2030-31 season. Until then the matches are still played in the stadium our members describe, which gives a trip taken now a particular flavour.
Why are two places called Old Trafford?
Because the district gave its name to two neighbouring grounds: the football stadium and Emirates Old Trafford, the cricket ground 900 metres away, which has its own hotel. Travellers get it wrong, and our selection lists both addresses while saying which is which.
What is there to see in the area outside match days?
In the district itself, little: the cricket ground 900 metres away and the Salford quays 2.3 kilometres off, now a quarter of theatres and restaurants. The rest is in the centre, 4 kilometres from Albert Square: libraries, museums and shopping streets. Our guide “Where to stay in Manchester” covers those quarters; this page only talks about the stadium.
How do you get to Old Trafford?
Through Manchester Piccadilly, where the London trains terminate, 5.3 kilometres from the stands, or through Manchester airport, 20.3 kilometres away. The tram then links the centre to the stadium: nothing is simpler on a match night.
