Visiting the Berardo Collection Museum
The Berardo Collection Museum is a dedicated space for modern and contemporary art located in Lisbon, Portugal. It stands as one of the most significant institutions for contemporary art in Europe. The works originate from the private collection of José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo, a Portuguese businessman who made these pieces available to the public through a partnership that requires the Portuguese state to maintain the facility. The museum is situated within the Centro Cultural de Belém (Belém Cultural Center), a district of Lisbon that runs along the Tejo (Tagus River) and hosts various artistic and cultural institutions.
A major modern and contemporary art museum in Lisbon
The Berardo Collection Museum houses a vast array of paintings, drawings, and sculptures spanning 70 artistic movements characteristic of 20th and 21st-century art. The permanent collection includes 900 works by approximately 500 different artists. This is often complemented by a series of temporary exhibitions that highlight specific dimensions of the modern and contemporary approach.
You will find works by European and American artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, or Piet Mondrian. These pieces trace various modern and contemporary art movements including Dadaism, Cubism, Surrealism, Nouveau Réalisme, Pop Art, and Conceptual Art.
An tribute to artists of yesterday and today
Inaugurated in 2007, the Berardo Collection Museum continues to expand its holdings. The works are displayed in chronological order, from early modernists to figures of the contemporary avant-garde. The installation explores the major questions that drove artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, specifically regarding the purpose of artistic production and what it seeks to represent.
Modern and contemporary art with a pretty varied mix of paintings, sculptures, and creations. There is plenty of space to walk around and really appreciate the works. The entrance price is reasonable. A nice bonus for families is the kids area where they are introduced to art in a fun way (there are explanations in French in this part of the museum).
