Visiting São Jorge Castle
Located in Lisbon, within the picturesque and charming Alfama neighborhood, the essential São Jorge Castle stands as one of the city's most prominent landmarks. It offers thousands of annual visitors a superb panoramic view over the capital of Portugal and the Tagus River.
A former military fortress
The structure features 11 towers, including a keep, the Tower of the Archives (also called the Treasury Tower), the Cistern Tower, the Palace Tower, and the Saint Lawrence Tower, all linked by high crenelated walls. Its second courtyard preserves the remains of an old cistern alongside a small entrance known as the Gate of Treason, which was used exclusively by secret messengers.
A pillar of Portuguese heritage
The permanent exhibition provides detailed insight into the castle's turbulent history and architectural evolution. Sitting at a strategic crossroads of civilizations, it was occupied by various groups, notably Visigoths and Moors, before being conquered in the 12th century by Afonso Henriques, the country's first king. Having become a center of political, administrative, and military power, it served as the backdrop for historic ceremonies, such as the return of Vasco da Gama after his voyage to India. Although it recently underwent renovations to incorporate original materials, the site lost some of its grandeur in the 1940s when the dictator Salazar ordered the destruction of its Gothic features.
The pleasant gardens, pools, and observation deck make this an ideal spot for a stroll. The roaming peacocks and nonchalant swans are a testament to the relaxed atmosphere. Its camera obscura, a chamber equipped with a lens system, allows you to view the city from various angles. A guided tour in English, Spanish, and Portuguese is offered for free every 20 minutes from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

An old defensive fortress that is very impressive, this castle is one of the must-see monuments in Lisbon. The visit immerses you in a beautiful medieval setting with walls, towers, but also gardens and peacocks. The structure is quite well preserved. I was a bit disappointed by the museum and the historical explanations on the audio guide, which I do not remember much of. The climb up to the castle is mostly worth the effort for the sumptuous panorama it offers over the rooftops of Lisbon. Plan on about 2 hours for the walk and around 15 euros.
