Why visit the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza?
Founded in the early 20th century, the museum occupies two historic buildings in the heart of the old town, a designated Unesco World Heritage Site. Most of its collection comes from the Puig des Molins Punic necropolis, one of the largest Phoenician and Carthaginian burial sites discovered in the Mediterranean basin.
Ibiza, known as Ibossim to the Phoenicians, served as a strategic trading post starting in the 7th century BCE. The museum helps explain why this small island drew so many different civilizations, sitting at the crossroads of ancient sea routes and valuable salt flats.
Must-see artifacts
The collection brings together amphorae, jewelry, votive figurines, and above all, numerous statuettes depicting the goddess Tanit, the Punic deity of fertility worshiped in Ibiza. These small terracottas, recovered by the hundreds from the tombs of Puig des Molins, form the most moving core of the exhibition.
You will also find pottery imported from Greece and North Africa, bearing witness to the intense commercial exchanges that crossed the island. The understated, well-lit rooms let each object breathe without overloading you with explanatory panels.
A unique setting: the ramparts of Dalt Vila
The visit goes beyond the display cases. The museum occupies spaces integrated into the Renaissance fortress built by the Spanish in the 16th century, offering views over the white rooftops of the citadel. Climbing up here through the cobblestone alleys of Dalt Vila is part of the experience itself. Allow about an hour to walk through all the rooms, making it an ideal stop to combine with a stroll through the old town or a visit to the nearby cathedral.
Friendly tip: arrive late in the morning outside the peak summer season. The museum stays uncrowded even during midday, unlike the coastal beaches and bars, and the light filtering through the ancient stones of Dalt Vila is especially striking at that hour.

This museum is one of the must-see spots in Ibiza if you want to better understand and discover the island's history, which goes way back. I found the museum really interesting and well laid out. The collections are varied and displayed nicely. The museum was recently renovated, and while I did not get a chance to see the new setup, the old version was already top notch.
