A pioneer of French online travel
The birth of an innovative concept
The story of Bourse des Vols began in February 1997 when Fabrice Dariot launched the 3615 Bourse des Vols service on the Minitel. A recent graduate of the Paris Institute of Statistics and the French Institute of Actuaries, this Parisian entrepreneur was barely 35 years old at the time.
His concept was groundbreaking for its era, allowing travelers to compare airline ticket prices directly from their homes. In a tourism sector still heavily dominated by brick-and-mortar agencies, this innovation met a genuine consumer need.
Immediate success on Minitel
Success was instantaneous. By 1998, the 3615 Bourse des Vols service ranked as the third most-visited Minitel service in France.
In 1999, the company expanded its operations by creating Bourse des Voyages. From then on, the offering included packaged tours alongside standalone flights. This dual strategic focus remains the foundation of its positioning today.
The shift to the web
The company Viaticum, the corporate structure behind the business, anticipated the digital revolution early on. In February 2000, it launched the bdv.fr website, becoming one of the first French online travel players to migrate to the web.
By 2001, the site ranked among the ten major e-tourism sites in the country. The transition from Minitel to the internet was a success.
Recognized innovation capacity
Strategic partnerships
Throughout its history, Bourse des Vols stood out for its ability to anticipate technological changes in the sector. In 2002, the company forged strategic partnerships with major players such as Go Voyages, becoming its primary online commercial partner.
The year 2003 marked a turning point with the signing of agreements with roughly thirty tour operators. Revenue reached 11 million euros (about $12 million USD). That same year, Viaticum won a trademark infringement lawsuit against Google in the Versailles Court of Appeal.
Pioneer of geolocation
In 2006, the agency deployed a niche development strategy. It created ten micro-websites targeting direct departures from ten provincial cities.
The following year, in 2007, Bourse des Vols became the first online travel agency to integrate geolocation. Offers now adapted based on the user's location while browsing.
Artificial intelligence and financial recognition
More recently, in the first half of 2023, the company worked in collaboration with French academia. The goal was to develop tourism service prototypes powered by artificial intelligence.
In 2017, the Banque de France awarded the company an H4 rating. This certification confirmed its ability to honor its financial commitments over a three-year horizon. That same year, Bourse des Vols recorded its 19th consecutive profitable fiscal year.
An exhaustive range of travel services
A global airline network
Bourse des Vols positioned itself as an operator striving for completeness in air transportation. The platform relies on search algorithms that query a vast database.
This database includes approximately 500 airlines and 1,200 airports worldwide. The technical approach aims to offer travelers the most competitive market rates, regardless of destination or time of year.
The service covers major international airlines as well as regional and low-cost carriers. This diversity constitutes one of the platform's key assets.
Packaged tours and editorial content
Alongside the sale of standalone flights, the Bourse des Voyages offering features more elaborate products. Guided tours, vacation packages, cruises, and vacation rentals make up this expanded range.
For this activity, the company partnered with more than fifty recognized tour operators in the sector. The official blog, launched in 2014, enriches the editorial offering with tips, suggestions, and information for travelers.
Significant financial growth
Between 2003 and 2011, the company's revenue climbed from 11 to 56 million euros (about $12 million to $61 million USD). This progression reflects significant growth during that period.
A turning point marked by liquidation and acquisition
IATA requirements
In July 2023, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) required Viaticum to produce a financial guarantee representing 80% of its revenue within 30 days. This demand came despite a profitable fiscal year.
Faced with the impossibility of raising this bank guarantee, IATA suspended the agency's ticketing rights via the BSP system on August 16, 2023. The company thus found itself deprived of its primary revenue source.
Judicial liquidation
This decision led to a rapid deterioration of the financial situation. The Paris Commercial Court pronounced the judicial liquidation of Viaticum on September 21, 2023, after 27 years of uninterrupted profitable operations.
The company's 25 employees were laid off by the court-appointed receiver. This bankruptcy marked the end of an entrepreneurial journey that had previously demonstrated its financial solidity.
Acquisition by Resaneo
In October 2023, the Paris Commercial Court validated the acquisition of Viaticum's intangible assets by Resaneo. This transportation booking platform is dedicated to tourism professionals. The acquisition amount totaled $57,250*.
This acquisition included the Bourse des Vols and Bourse des Voyages brands, the websites, domain names, and software. Raphaël Torro, president of Resaneo, expressed his intention to relaunch both brands by leveraging their history of organic search engine optimization on Google.
A fresh start
The bourse-des-vols.com website is operational once again. It offers flight booking and packaged tour services under its new management.
Fabrice Dariot, the company's founder, has moved on to new projects. He now dedicates himself to the fields of artificial intelligence and literary publishing.
Hello, A round trip from Paris to Washington was €480 (about $515) with a major airline, Brussels Airlines, on Bourse des vols. Well, it was the most affordable price after checking all over the web. I bought it right away without hesitation, and everything went off without a hitch. It is always nice to get cheap prices, but it is not every day!
