Where to stay in Lanzarote: the 4 areas to know in 2026
On Lanzarote, the island sleeps in three resorts. The rules César Manrique pushed for kept the big hotels away from the villages: you stay in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise, and the rest of the island only offers rural houses. Between any two resorts, the drive never takes more than an hour.
For a night, allow $79* for a resort apartment and $135 to $250* for a good four-star, while the resorts set right on the beach go past $340*. Four areas follow, from the sheltered south to the north and its caves.

One base or several?
A single base is almost always enough: the island can be crossed in an hour. A second one only makes sense for La Graciosa, or to combine Lanzarote with Fuerteventura.
- A long weekend: One base, in Puerto del Carmen: Timanfaya in the morning, La Geria in the afternoon, and a day at Papagayo.
- A week: One base in the south, Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca, and day trips from there, including a full day for the caves and the Mirador del Río.
- Ten days: Two bases: a week in the south, then two or three nights on La Graciosa or in Corralejo, on Fuerteventura, which the Playa Blanca ferry puts thirty-five minutes away.
How much driving between two bases?
Times given by car, on clear roads. The island's roads are good and quiet; only the Papagayo track forces you to crawl.

Puerto del Carmen The big resort on the south coast, from Los Pocillos beach to the old harbour
for a first stay in the thick of things, without taking the car out at night
Six kilometres of seafront, from Los Pocillos beach to the old harbour, where fishing boats share the quays with dive centres. It is the liveliest resort: restaurants, bars and shops line the Avenida de las Playas. The airport is twenty minutes away, Timanfaya half an hour. The downside: noise on the avenue at night, and a coastline built up without a break.

Pros
- Everything on foot, morning to night
- The airport and Timanfaya less than forty minutes away
Cons
- A noisy avenue late into the night
- A seafront built up from end to end
Playa Blanca and Yaiza The southern tip, from the Rubicón marina to the Papagayo coves, and the village of Yaiza
for sheltered coves, and for hopping over to Fuerteventura
The south most sheltered from the wind. Playa Blanca stretches along its seafront promenade to the Rubicón marina, and the Papagayo coves are a quarter of an hour away by dirt track. It is also the ferry port for Fuerteventura, just opposite. Inland, the white village of Yaiza looks out at the Timanfaya volcanoes. The downside: a recent resort made of hotel complexes, and forty minutes to the airport.
If you want to head over to Fuerteventura, this is the right place to catch the ferry.

Pros

Cons

- Forty minutes to the airport
Arrecife, Costa Teguise and Teguise The capital and its Reducto beach, the Costa Teguise resort, and the old capital inland
for the nearby airport, local life and the Sunday market
A more everyday island. Arrecife has kept its shopping streets, its harbour and El Reducto beach, where locals swim. Ten minutes away, Costa Teguise is the quietest of the three resorts, with Las Cucharas beach and the wind that draws windsurfers. Inland, Teguise fills its squares every Sunday. The downside: the north-east wind blows hard here, and Playa Blanca is more than forty minutes away.

Pros

- The life of a real town, and the Teguise market
Cons
- The windiest side of the island
- Far from the southern coves
The north and the interior Haría and its valley of palms, the northern caves, La Geria and the edge of Timanfaya
for sleeping away from the resorts, among vines or palm trees
No resorts here: white villages and rural houses. Haría sits at the bottom of a valley covered in palm trees, a quarter of an hour from Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes, and the harbour at Órzola sails to La Graciosa. In the centre of the island, Mozaga and Tinajo border the La Geria vines and the Timanfaya lava flows. The downside: few places to stay, no beach on foot, and the car for everything.

Our tips for booking the right place
- Check where the wind blows from: The trade wind comes from the north-east, and it blows hard in summer. Costa Teguise and the east coast take it head on; Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen are sheltered. If you are coming for the beach in July or August, pick the south.
- Choose your resort before your hotel: The three resorts do not share the same character. Puerto del Carmen comes alive at night, Playa Blanca goes to bed early, Costa Teguise stays quiet and close to the airport. Decide on the atmosphere first; the hotel will follow.
- Keep a night for La Graciosa: The boats from Órzola drop off hundreds of day visitors, who leave again in the late afternoon. Sleep on the island, in Caleta del Sebo, and you will have its beaches almost to yourself in the evening and the next morning.
- Book early for Christmas and carnival: Winter is high season: between Christmas and New Year, and during the February carnival, the best seafront hotels are full months ahead. Book in the summer for those weeks.
- Booking Costa Teguise for a beach week in high summer: it is the windiest coast.
- Staying in the north without a car: no bus and no beach within walking distance to fall back on.
- Taking a room on the avenue side in Puerto del Carmen if you want an early night.
- Doing La Graciosa as a return trip of a few hours: it only shows itself after the last boat.
