Things to do in Nafplio: must-see attractions

Visiting Nafplio

Located 140 km from Athens, Nafplio stands as the jewel of the Peloponnese. Sitting at the heart of the Argolic Gulf, this peninsula, separated from the mainland by the famous Corinth Canal, offers a unique charm where the sea meets lush Mediterranean nature. As the first capital of Greece following the Turkish occupation in 1829, Nafplio retains the layered influences of its past occupiers in its streets, creating a destination with real character. The historical weight is balanced by the relaxed pace of a seaside town. It is often called the city of love, but more importantly, it is a place for a proper vacation.

A charming historic center

At the center of the old town, Syntagma Square, or Constitution Square, serves as the local hub. It pulses with life throughout the day and night and acts as an excellent starting point for discovering the architectural wonders of Nafplio. Two former mosques, Vouleftikon and the Trianon, serve as reminders of the Ottoman era, while Panagia Church may look modest from the outside but hides an interior sparkling with gold leaf and elaborate chandeliers. Nearby, a grand Venetian building houses the Archaeological Museum. Neoclassical mansions line the streets, and as you head toward Staikopoulo Street, you will find boutique shops leading to the surprising Komboloi Museum, dedicated to the famous Greek worry beads. Four rooms are dedicated to these objects, offering a fascinating look at items made of amber, ivory, or wood that carry no religious significance. With colorful facades, pedestrian-friendly cobblestone streets, small fountains, and statues, the historic center possesses an infinite charm that feels almost Italian. Restaurants are everywhere, and you can expect to find souvlaki, fresh fish, honey, olive oil, and local wines, as Nafplio is full of flavor.

Between citadels and the sea

Facing the Bourtzi islet, a fortress dating back to 1473, the port of Nafplio is a must, if only for the view. The waterfront promenade leads to the pebble beach of Arvanitia, a 25-minute walk nestled between rocks and greenery with the water below, highlighting the city's easy-going nature. Two majestic citadels stand as sentinels at opposite ends of the city. At an altitude of 216m, the Palamidi Fortress dates from 1711 and was designed to be impregnable with its eight bastions connected by walls and watchtowers. You have to earn the view, as you can reach it by a staircase of 857 or 999 steps, depending on who is counting, or by car. As a true fort dominating the city, it provides a history lesson and an incredible panorama. On its own rocky peninsula, the Acronauplia Citadel sits lower at 45m, but it is much older. Composed of three castles that were frequently modified by various occupiers, it is another major historical site. Nafplio is a savory mix of romance and remarkable monuments, making it a highly engaging destination.

When to go

From April to November, the climate is very mild. Aim for the shoulder seasons to avoid the heavy crowds that arrive in the peak of summer.
