Visiting Les Belleville
Les Belleville is a mountain town in the Savoie department of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region. Established in 2016 through the merger of Saint-Martin-de-Belleville and Villarlurin, it is best known for its direct access to the massive Les Trois Vallees ski area.
Mountains in winter
Sitting at an elevation of 1,450 meters (4,757 feet), the village is a gateway to the Les Trois Vallees ski domain. It is a premier destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Consider the scale: this is the largest linked ski area in the world, connecting eight resorts, including Val Thorens, across more than 600 kilometers (373 miles) of trails. Whether you are into alpine skiing, cross-country, backcountry, or snowboarding, the terrain here covers every skill level.
Beyond traditional skiing, the area offers dog sledding, snow groomer rides, chairlift sightseeing, snowshoeing, and even paragliding flights. The village looks like a postcard under a fresh layer of snow, with plenty of chalets and mountain lodges scattered across the commune. It is also the ideal place to refuel with hearty Savoyard cuisine, which hits the spot after a long day on the slopes. Think tartiflette, fondue, and crozets. If you are looking for a fine dining experience, the restaurant La Bouitte holds three Michelin stars.
Mountains in summer
Les Belleville shifts gears when the snow melts. It becomes a primary base for hikers hitting the Alpine trails. The most popular routes are the Balcon des Belleville, which passes by traditional mountain pasture chalets, and the Perron des Encombres, known for its panoramic views of Mont Blanc in the distance. The village is also a stop on the "Chemins du baroque" (Baroque Trails) hiking circuit. Mountain bikers have plenty of options as well, with extensive trails mapped out specifically for off-road cycling.
The village itself is worth a slow walk. Traditional houses made of wood, stone, and slate line the narrow streets, creating a distinct aesthetic. For a look at local history, the chapelle de Notre-Dame-de-la-Vie showcases the Savoyard baroque style common to the region and serves as a major pilgrimage site for the Tarentaise Valley. The parish church and the Moulin du Burdin are also local landmarks.
When to go
Les Belleville is a year-round destination, offering completely different experiences between the peak winter and summer seasons. The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are quieter, allowing for a much more relaxed visit with fewer tourists.
How to get there
