Where to stay in Orgnac-l'Aven: the best neighbourhoods (2026)
Visiting the Aven d'Orgnac cave requires a guided tour at scheduled times. In February, there are only 3 tours a day, with the final one starting at 5 PM. You cannot simply drop by on a whim; you have to plan your day around the timetable, which is exactly why staying overnight makes sense.
The village of Orgnac-l'Aven has a population of 575, 2 hotel-restaurants, and 5 bed-and-breakfasts, with the most affordable double room priced at 66 EUR. The 3 areas below start from the village center, head up toward the cave entrance, and continue on to Barjac, a 20-minute drive away. It is the neighboring town where a campground still welcomes passing travelers.

The village of Orgnac-l'Aven The village center, 2,4 kilomètres from the cave
The 2 restaurants and the bakery, within walking distance
The village of Orgnac-l'Aven centers around its square, amid vineyards and scrubland. You can walk to dinner here: 2 restaurants, a bakery that doubles as a tea room, and a pizza stand. Anywhere else in the township requires getting back in the car. The municipal campground and RV area sit along the Vallon road, 900 mètres further north. The catch is the schedule: outside of July and August, the hotel restaurant closes on Sunday evenings and Mondays.

Les Stalagmites Mid-range
A hotel-restaurant on the Pont-Saint-Esprit road, where the same family has worked for 4 generations. 150 mètres of street connect it to the village square. It rents standard and air-conditioned rooms, including one accessible room, and operates from early April to October 15. It explicitly advises that some of its rooms are not listed on booking platforms, meaning you need to call or write directly.
Les Chênes de l'Aven Mid-range
A 5-room guesthouse with a pool, located 600 mètres from the center of the village. Its season runs from mid-June to mid-September, totaling 3 months a year. A hot tub heated to 35 degrees can be reserved by the session and is paid for on-site.
Pros
- The 2 restaurants and the bakery sit in the village center
- The village hotel displays its rate sheet
- 900 mètres separate the village center from the RV area
Cons
- The town hall announces that transient sites at the municipal campground are fully booked
- Outside of July and August, the hotel restaurant closes on Sunday evenings and Mondays
- 2,4 kilomètres separate the village center from the entrance to the cave
Aven Road and the Grand Site At the foot of the cave, 2.4 kilometres from the village
The first morning tour departure
Aven Road climbs from the village toward the limestone plateau and ends at the Grand Site, featuring a reception building, the Cité de la Préhistoire museum, a casual dining terrace, free shaded parking, and an adjacent hotel-restaurant. One important detail is that once the site closes, the nearest open door is back in the village 2.4 kilometres down the road.
For my part, I did some rappelling and spelunking, but there are more classic guided tours available. The surrounding site is very well set up with a museum and small workshops.

Les Terrasses de l'Aven Mid-range
The single hotel-restaurant at the Grand Site sits 130 metres from the main reception building. Its website is down, so reservations require a phone call or email, with contact details listed directly on the Grand Site page. The business is fully operational and registered with active employees on the national corporate registry.
Le petit chêne Budget
A guesthouse in the hamlet of Pouzol, on the road to the Aven, right between the town center and the cave. It sits 950 metres from the village square. No website features it, so you have to get the phone number directly from the town hall.
Pros
- The reception building and ticket office are less than 300 metres away
- Parking is free and shaded
- A playground and picnic area with free access
Cons
- No shops stay open in the evening around here
- 2.4 kilometres separate the Grand Site from the two village restaurants
- The area's only hotel no longer has a working website
Barjac, in the Gard department 11 kilometres to the southwest, about 20 minutes away
A campsite for overnight travelers and a hotel pool
Barjac is a medieval bastide town in the Gard, featuring an arcaded square, open-air markets, and local bistros. It provides what Orgnac-l'Aven lacks: a campground welcoming transient guests, and a hotel complete with a pool and spa. The 2 addresses featured here sit outside the main village, 1,6 kilometres for the campground and 4 kilometres for the hotel. The trade-off is the morning drive: 11 kilometres and 20 minutes before reaching the cave.

Le Mas du Terme Luxury
A 40-hectare wine estate framed by lavender fields and olive groves, home to a 4-star hotel. It features 27 rooms and suites, a heated pool, a spa offering massages, and an on-site restaurant, Le Carré des Saveurs. No other property in this guide matches this rating.
Camping La Buissière Budget
A 3-star rated campground on route d'Orgnac, featuring a swimming pool and organized activities. It has 99 pitches and welcomes tents, caravans, and RVs, while also renting mobile homes. Its 2026 season runs from April 3 to September 28.
Pros
- The closest overnight campground to the cave
- A pool and spa, unique to this guide
- Local shops and markets right in the town center
Cons
- 11 kilometres and a 20-minute drive before every tour
- The campground closes from September 29 to April 2
- Both addresses are set outside Barjac's town center and its shops
Our tips for booking the right place
- Departure schedules, season by season: The cave is toured with a guide, and the visit lasts 1 hour. From July to the end of August, tours run continuously from 9:45 AM to 6 PM. The rest of the year, departures are limited: 3 in February and during the Christmas vacation, 5 in March, and one every 30 minutes in April, May, June, and September. In October and November, morning tours stop at noon, and afternoon tours run from 2:15 PM to 4:30 PM. The site is open from February 1st to November 15th, and then from December 19th to January 3rd, closing on December 25th and January 1st.
- Bring a sweater, the 700 steps, and the elevator: The cave stays at 12 degrees Celsius year-round, and the descent involves 700 steps, while the return trip is by elevator. The site requires a sweater and good footwear. A visitor in a wheelchair can access the final room via the elevators, with a discounted rate. Online booking is not mandatory, and the site only recommends it on rainy days when crowds lengthen the wait at the ticket office.
- The hotel season versus the cave season: The cave opens as early as February 1st, but the village accommodations do not. The town hotel welcomes guests from early April to October 15th, the guesthouse from mid-June to mid-September, and the municipal campground from March 1st to November 1 November. For a visit in February, March, or after mid-October, you need to look for a room outside the town and check your dates before heading out.
- Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, the river, and the overlooks: Canoe trips start from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, which lines up 4 rated hotels and around fifteen campgrounds. Plan for 18,2 kilometres and 27 minutes of driving from the village of Orgnac-l'Aven. On the gorges, the map is even more deceiving: the Madeleine overlook sits 5,5 kilometres away in a straight line, but the scenic route is accessed through Vallon or Saint-Remèze, making the actual drive 31,9 kilometres and 46 minutes. For both the river and the overlooks, stay in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc.
- Counting on the municipal campground for an overnight stop is a risk: its pitches are rented out year-round to mobile home owners, and the town hall lists its remaining spots as fully booked. The closest campground for transients is in Barjac.
- Arriving at the Grand Site at 4 PM on a November day means the last guided tour departure is at 4:30 PM, and the tour lasts 1 hour. At the same time in February, one departure remains at 5 PM.
- Planning an evening near the cave base is tough: when the site closes, the nearest open business is back in the village, 2,4 kilometres down the road.
