Florac

Where to stay in Florac: the best neighbourhoods (2026)

Florac has a population of 2,100, and most of the places you will actually want to sleep here bypass official ratings entirely. The town only counts four rated properties on paper, split between two hotels and two campgrounds, while the reality on the ground brings 26 options into play including gîtes, farm stays, a welcome center, and even a mountain cabin.

That gap matters when you arrive on foot. Filtering strictly by star ratings here means missing out on the best trailside stops and focusing only on the highest-priced stays. The two areas below are organized by municipality, and the boundaries shift fast since anything past 2.5 kilometers from the river confluence puts you sleeping in the neighboring communes. No trains pull into Florac either, and the closest rail connection sits more than 25 kilometers away.

The town and the banks of the Tarn Municipality of Florac Trois Rivières, up to 2.5 kilometres

walking stopover, with shops right at your doorstep

All of Florac fits into 1 kilometer, right where three valleys meet, and the banks of the Tarn stretch the town for another 1.5 kilometers. Fifteen spots share this area, and that is the extent of the local variety: six hotels, a welcome center, a gîte, five campgrounds, and a farmhouse B&B. A member of our community, FloraC, describes flowers, ponds with ducks, a chateau with its park, and suggests wandering around for a few hours. Another member, julies_journeys, finds it rather deserted and dim, but highlights the atmosphere created by its bohemian crowd.

I really liked Florac. Objectively, it is a pretty deserted and dimly lit town located in the Cévennes. But there is a special atmosphere there, probably because of its bohemian population.

Where to stay in this area

Grand Hôtel du Parc Mid-range

A 3-star hotel with 52 rooms on avenue Jean-Monestier: no other hotel in Florac has that many. The official ratings only include two hotels here, and this is one of them.

The only group accommodation in town. It is the dorm setup every hiker looks for, and one that escapes official ratings in this area.

Check availability

Camping Le Val des Cévennes Budget

A 2-star campground with 300 pitches, the second rated site in town. Combined with the municipal site, it handles most of the outdoor lodging in Florac.

Check availability

Camping Velay Budget

A campground situated 900 metres from town. Along with its immediate neighbor, it forms the pair of sites where you can walk into town for supplies.

Check availability

La Ferme de Salièges Mid-range

A guesthouse sitting 2.5 kilometres away, marking the last address in town as you head up the valley. Past this point, you cross into another municipality without even realizing it.

Heading up the valleys, outside the town limits Bédouès-Cocurès and Gorges du Tarn Causses, from 2.8 to 4.9 kilometres away

the farmhouse stay and the quiet, provided you take the winding road

Past 2.5 kilometres, you leave Florac without any sign telling you so, as the next nine addresses fall under Bédouès-Cocurès or Gorges du Tarn Causses. These are valley farmhouses, gîtes, and campgrounds, matching what our member Laure D describes in the Cévennes: chestnut forests, empty trails, and no cell service. There is even an unmanned mountain cabin listed at 4 kilometres out. None of these places show up on the national registry, and most take bookings by phone rather than online forms.

Here, nature doesn't cheat. It is intact, often subjected to intense Cévenol weather episodes, and always wild. If you love wide open spaces and are ready to hike through chestnut forests with no cell service and without running into anyone, take a trip to the Cévennes.

A riverside campground 3,2 kilometres upstream, serving as the sole campsite in this area. It does not appear in any official star ratings.

Check availability

La Ferme des Cévennes Mid-range

A guesthouse 3,3 kilometres out, set back from the main road. The quiet is the main draw here, which is exactly what our members come looking for.

Check availability

Gîtes du Tomple Budget

Rentals 4,8 kilometres away, the furthest in this roundup and already sitting within the commune of Gorges du Tarn Causses. A car is mandatory here, even just to grab dinner.

Pros

  • Silence and chestnut forests right outside your door
  • Farm stays and vacation rentals that the town itself does not offer

Cons

  • You are technically outside the town limits of Florac, despite how close it feels
  • Cell service drops out in spots, so book before you head out

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Official ratings show only a sixth of the actual stays: That is the quirk of Florac, and it changes how you look for a place. The national registry lists just **4 establishments** in town: Grand Hôtel du Parc, Hôtel des Gorges du Tarn, camping municipal du Pont du Tarn, and camping du Val des Cévennes. Count the ground reality and you get **26** options, including gîtes, guest houses, a retreat center, and a cabin. These are not hidden or illegal spots, gîtes d'étape and farm stays simply do not fit into the categories tracked by that registry. A booking site filtered by star ratings will show you the pricier side of Florac and hide the spots hikers actually want.
  • A phone call beats the online form: Out of the 26 spots recorded around town, 16 list a phone number and 17 a website, but the valley gîtes and farms usually take bookings the old-fashioned way with a direct call. Take it from our community member Laure D, who points out that the chestnut forests have zero cell reception. You are much better off calling and writing down directions before you head out on the trail rather than counting on a confirmation mid-hike. That goes for where you sleep tonight and where you plan to stay tomorrow.
  • A town much larger than its main hub: Florac merged with its neighbors and is now called Florac Trois Rivières. The municipality stretches far beyond the town center, reaching out to hamlets located twenty kilometres away. An address reading "48400 Florac Trois Rivières" can easily sit a three-quarter-hour drive from the confluence, up on a mountain road. Before booking, check the specific locality and listed distance rather than the town name, much like you would for a shared ZIP code.
Where not to stay in Florac (honestly)
  • Filtering by stars to find a place to stay. The national registry lists only 2 hotels and 2 campsites in Florac, meaning gîtes, farmstay B&Bs, and the youth hostel, which make up the bulk of the accessible lodging, do not show up and stay invisible in that search.
  • Assuming "48400 Florac Trois Rivières" means an address right in the center. The expanded municipality includes hamlets twenty kilometres out on mountain roads.
  • Counting on arriving by train. No train station serves Florac, and the nearest rail stop sits over 25 kilometres away.
  • Booking a valley farmhouse while expecting to call from the trail. A member named Laure D describes chestnut forests with zero cell service, meaning phone calls happen before you head out.

FAQ: where to stay in Florac

Why are so few places to stay in Florac on booking sites?
Because most are unclassified, and star filters weed them out. The national registry includes only 4 properties in town, two hotels and two campsites, while 26 actually exist on the ground, including gîtes, guest houses, a reception center, and even a mountain cabin. Hiking accommodations simply do not fall under that rating system. Search by accommodation type instead of stars, and do not hesitate to make a phone call.
Where to stay on a budget in Florac?
Right along the Tarn riverbanks at the campgrounds. The two rated campsites in the municipality offer a combined 864 spots, with 564 at the municipal site alone, while three unrated grounds round out the options along the river. Two of them sit 900 metres from the town center, making it easy to walk to the shops. Right in town, the group reception center provides shared lodging, and it does not appear in any star registry.
Can you get around without a car in Florac?
For the town center, yes, absolutely: six hotels, a gîte, a reception center, and several campgrounds fit within a few streets, shops included. For the valley farmhouses, no, absolutely not: they sit between 2,5 and 4,9 kilometres away on mountain roads, and you also have to drive just to grab dinner. Keep in mind that no train station serves the municipality, and the nearest rail stop is over 25 kilometres away.
Is Florac a good base for Cévennes National Park?
Yes, and our members are unanimous about what they found there. JeromeA points out that it is the largest national park in mainland France and praises the variety of vegetation and terrain. ValNomad cycled up Mount Aigoual from there. Laure D describes chestnut forests where you will not cross paths with a soul. Just keep in mind that the park stretches far south of town, and distances are measured in mountain driving time.
What is there to see in Florac itself?
Few monuments, plenty of atmosphere, and our two members who stayed there do not see eye to eye on every detail. FloraC found flowers, waterways with ducks, a château and its park, and suggests wandering around for a few hours while grabbing a waffle or an ice cream. julies_journeys describes it as rather deserted and lacking sunlight, yet holds onto the memory of a distinct atmosphere shaped by its bohemian population. Both recommend it, for different reasons.
How does it compare to Sainte-Enimie, 30 kilometres away?
Both villages belong to the park, but they offer entirely different experiences. Sainte-Enimie sits at the bottom of the Tarn gorges, thriving on canoeing and river runs, with a short season and winding switchback roads. Florac rests at the confluence of three valleys, right on the Stevenson Trail, and caters to hikers with guesthouses, farms, and a visitor center rather than riverfront hotels. If you are walking, choose Florac; if you are paddling down the Tarn, choose its neighbor.
