Where to stay in Yangon: the 4 neighborhoods to know in 2026
In Yangon, everything is measured from the Shwedagon: the golden stupa, a hundred meters high on its hill, can be seen from every neighborhood, and every neighborhood is defined by the road that leads to it. The colonial center is three kilometers to the south, a British grid with its markets and its peeling facades; the lakes of Kandawgyi and Inya surround it; Bahan, the district of embassies and gardens, leans against its hill; to the north, the airport road. Two days are enough, a member says, so it is for two nights that you choose.
A dorm bed runs between $17 and $23*, a three or four-star between $51 and $101*, and the city's grand hotels, from $73 to $124*, cost what a three-star costs elsewhere. Twelve addresses whose listing still accepts bookings, and four member reviews, three of them quoted, because they say what each pagoda is worth and how long to stay. The country has been in civil war since 2021: a tip further down says what that changes for anyone sleeping here.
In 2 days, you will have seen it all. After that, I think it is better to move on, to see something else.

The colonial center: Sule, Pansodan and the river South: Sule Pagoda, City Hall, Maha Bandula, Pansodan Street, Bogyoke market, Chinatown, Botataung, the river
for the British facades, the markets and the streets you can walk
The center is a grid laid out by the British in 1852: numbered streets running down to the river, colonnaded buildings with facades blackened by the monsoon, trees growing out of the balconies. In the middle, the Sule Pagoda, planted in a roundabout, City Hall and Maha Bandula Park; on Pansodan Street, the pavement booksellers and the old ministries; to the north, Bogyoke market, halls from 1926, for jade, longyis and lacquerware; to the west, Chinatown and its 19th Street, covered in grills at nightfall; to the east, the Botataung Pagoda and its hair of the Buddha, by the river. The downside: the traffic on Sule Pagoda Road at all hours, and broken pavements. A member says what the Sule is worth, and she is not kind.
The weird thing about this pagoda is that it is right in the middle of a roundabout.

Sule Shangri-La, Yangon Luxury
On Sule Pagoda Road, five minutes from the pagoda and the facades: the grand hotel of the center, pool, spa, and three hundred reviews at 9.1 that mention the staff above all. For the price of a European three-star.
Yangon Excelsior Mid-range
The 1920 Steel Brothers building on Strand Road, reopened as a hotel: columns, parquet floors and ceiling fans, a restaurant the reviews mention, and 9.7 on only seventy reviews. The best score in this guide.
HOOD Hostel Budget
On 36th Street, in the heart of the grid: pod beds in an old building, breakfast included, a bar, and 8.2, with 9.3 for the staff. The only dorm in the center still open on the listings.
Pros
- The Sule, Bogyoke market and the colonial facades on foot
- The grills of Chinatown in the evening, two streets from the hotels
Cons
- The traffic and horns of Sule Pagoda Road at all hours
- The Shwedagon three kilometers away, by taxi
The Shwedagon and Kandawgyi Lake Center-north: Shwedagon, Kandawgyi Lake and its boardwalk, Karaweik, zoo, People's Park, Chaukhtatgyi, National Museum
for the stupa at dawn, the walk around the lake and families
The Shwedagon is the real center of the city: a hill, four covered stairways, and at the top a marble terrace where the golden stupa towers over seventy pavilions, bells and families sitting in circles. You climb barefoot, at dawn or at sunset, and you stay. Below, to the east, Kandawgyi Lake and its boardwalk on stilts, the Karaweik, the gilded royal barge that serves as a restaurant, the zoo and the park; to the west, People's Park and the National Museum. To the north, the reclining Buddha of Chaukhtatgyi, sixty-five meters under a hangar. The downside: few hotels, and the center twenty minutes away by taxi. A member says what time to climb.
A lot of people recommend it at sunset, but I went in the morning. The staircase to get up there, with its wooden ceiling, was really beautiful.

Bahan is the city's green hill: villas among the trees, the embassies, the cafés and restaurants where English is spoken, and Golden Valley, the district of houses with gardens. To the north, Inya Lake, the largest in Yangon, with its shores where the city walks in the evening, the university campuses and, on the east bank, the Kaba Aye Pagoda and the gems museum. The hotels here are new, quiet, with pools, and the taxis know every address. The downside: nothing old to see on foot beyond the lake, and a district that lives by car.

Our tips for booking the right place
- Read your country's advice before booking: Myanmar has been in civil war since the coup of February 2021. Yangon has stayed clear of the fighting, but several foreign ministries advise against travel, and the advice changes: read it the day you book, not the day before you leave. On the ground, avoid gatherings, do not photograph soldiers or official buildings, keep your passport on you, and take out insurance that covers the country.
- Crisp dollars and a generator: Foreign cards rarely work and the cash machines are empty every other day: bring crisp dollars, with no folds or marks, which hotels and money changers accept, and pay for the room in advance online when the listing allows it. Power has been cut for several hours a day since 2022: ask whether the hotel has a generator, the big ones do, the guesthouses not always.
- The Shwedagon is earned barefoot: Shoes and socks are left at the bottom of the stairways, shoulders and knees covered, a longyi can be rented at the entrance. The marble terrace burns at noon: climb at dawn, when families come to pray, or an hour before sunset, when the candles are lit. A ticket for foreigners, valid all day, lets you go down and come back.
- Monsoon from May to October, a furnace in April: From mid-May to October, it rains every day, hard, and the streets of the center flood; from November to February, the sky is dry and it is the season for visiting; in March and April, it is forty degrees and the city stops for Thingyan, the water festival, for a week. A hotel with a pool is not a luxury from March to May.
- An airport hotel for anything other than a stopover: Mingaladon is an hour from the center, and the addresses on Kaba Aye Road do just as well fifteen minutes from the runways.
- A guesthouse in the center without a generator: the room becomes an oven at the first power cut, and they are daily.
- The towers of Thanlyin or the south bank, across the river: a bridge, a traffic jam, and nothing to see.
