The old French quarter is laid out in a tight grid between the canal and the sea. The houses turn their backs to the street behind a yellow wall and a tall doorway, keeping daily life hidden in the inner courtyard. Street signs read rue Suffren, rue Romain Rolland, and rue Dumas, while the ashram occupies the northern part of the sector and cars clear out from the seafront by late afternoon. The downside is clear: this is the side where you run into the fewest locals, and dining tables close early.

Past the canal, the orderly grid gives way to crooked intersections and houses turned outward, where the built-in masonry bench by the entryway serves as a living room for watching the street go by. This is where you find the temples, market stalls, and Mahatma Gandhi Road with its shops. A 4-star hotel located at 432 Mahatma Gandhi Road, complete with a rooftop pool, fitness center, and restaurant. The property caters to business travelers as well as vacationers, and it also houses meeting rooms.
Maison Radha Mid-range
A historic house at 23 Tillai Maistry Street, run by the same group behind Villa Shanti. It puts the market and temples just a few blocks away, with the promenade a 15-minute walk.

Auroville is an international intentional community set on a plateau that its residents reforested, 8 kilometres north of the ashram, and it does not belong to Puducherry, you actually cross into a different state when you enter. Its guesthouses are scattered through the forest around the Matrimandir, meaning you need a scooter just to run basic errands. The swimmable beaches are on this northern side, starting 4 kilometres from the center. A visitor contribution is asked of everyone coming to the town, and most guesthouses bundle it into the room rate.
Auroville is a truly unique place that I recommend you visit. This rather unusual community is very interesting and allows for some great conversations. I did not know this, but it is also a major research site. The residents are welcoming and happy to answer questions.

A guesthouse right on the main road of Auroville, near the village of Kuilapalayam. This spot puts the township as close to the Puducherry highway as it gets.
Tanto Far Beach Guest House Mid-range
The official seaside guesthouse listed by Auroville, and the only one right on the water. It works best if you want the beach rather than the Matrimandir, which sits quite a bit further away.
Mitra Youth Hostel Budget
The Auroville youth hostel, tucked behind the community house on Bliss Way. Like all lodgings here, booking goes through the reception service rather than directly with the property.

Our tips for booking the right place
- Ashram rules before you book: The Sri Aurobindo Ashram runs 8 guesthouses, and it explicitly states they are meant for ashram visitors, not travelers looking for a cheap room in town. Only 3 of them, Park, Cottage, and New Guest House, are authorized to register foreign guests. The other 5 cannot host them. Rooms are intentionally barebones with no phone, no television, and no Wi-Fi. There is no room service, and most gates lock at 10:30 PM.
- Two-wheelers over taxis: The two central neighborhoods are entirely walkable. You can cross the canal in a few steps, and the seafront is at the end of every street in White Town. As soon as Auroville or the beaches are on the itinerary, distances change. The township starts 8 kilometres away, its guesthouses are scattered through the forest, and the named beaches start 4 kilometres to the north. Renting a scooter or motorbike costs less than a daily round-trip taxi, and it is the way locals get around.
- Two sets of street names: East of the canal, street signs are in French, including rue Suffren, rue Romain Rolland, rue Dumas, and rue Labourdonnais. To the west, they use Tamil and Indian names like Mission Street, Rangapillai Street, and Mahatma Gandhi Road. A hotel address tells you right away which side of town it is on before you even look at a map. Stick to the version listed in your confirmation because that is the name drivers know.

- Choosing White Town for nightlife. It is the prettiest and quietest neighborhood, but that also means things shut down early and residents live on the other side of the canal. If you want evening street life, you will be better off west of the canal.
