Things to do in Bastimentos Island: must-see attractions

Visit Isla Bastimentos for natural, quiet surroundings

A peaceful village in the heart of the archipelago

Isla Bastimentos, located in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, is known for its laid-back vibe and preserved tropical landscapes. The main village, Old Bank, is a small hamlet accessible only by foot or boat. Colorful wooden houses and the complete absence of roads define the island's charm. Here, life moves at a slow pace, offering an authentic experience far from the activity of more developed tourist areas.

Wild beaches and crystal-clear waters

The island is home to some of the finest beaches in the region, perfect for relaxing or water sports. Red Frog Beach, named after the tiny red frogs that inhabit the area, is the most famous stretch of sand. Accessible by water taxi followed by a short walk, it is lined with palm trees and offers waves suitable for surfing.

More secluded, Wizard Beach appeals to those seeking solitude, though it is less safe for swimming due to strong currents.

Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park

A large portion of the island is protected by the Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park, which preserves mangroves, coral reefs, and local wildlife. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can explore reefs rich with tropical fish and sea turtles.

On land, the mangroves host an impressive level of biodiversity, accessible via guided kayak or boat tours. It is a necessary stop for nature lovers.

A lively Afro-Caribbean culture

Old Bank carries a strong Afro-Caribbean influence, visible in the music, dance, and local language, which is a unique creole. Visitors can also shop for local crafts, including carved wood objects or handmade jewelry. These cultural elements add depth to the island experience beyond its natural beauty.

Local gastronomy

The cuisine on Isla Bastimentos reflects its Afro-Caribbean heritage. Dishes are often based on fish or seafood, prepared with coconut milk and local spices. Try the rondón, a seafood stew, or pan bon, a sweet bread typical of the region. For tropical drinks, tamarind juice or a freshly opened coconut are standard choices.

When to go?

The best time to visit Isla Bastimentos is during the dry season, from December to April, when the weather is ideal for beaches and water activities. September and October, while wetter, are also popular for diving and snorkeling due to optimal underwater visibility. During local festivals, such as Carnival, the island comes alive with traditional music and dance.

How to get there?

Isla Bastimentos is accessible via water taxi from Bocas Town, on Isla Colón, with regular trips that take about 10 minutes and cost between 5 and 10 PAB (about $5-10). To reach Bocas Town, take a domestic flight from Panama City or a bus to Almirante followed by a boat ride to the archipelago. Once on Isla Bastimentos, you will get around by foot or boat, maintaining the island's peaceful atmosphere.

The island of the red frogs

During a stay in the Bocas del Toro islands, a trip to Bastimentos Island is a must. First, enjoy its magnificent golden sand beach. You used to be able to find tiny red frogs there. It is fun to look and see if they are still around! The Caribbean village of Bastimentos is also very pleasant. You can enjoy local specialties with a drink on a terrace built on stilts. Finally, the marine park is great to explore with a mask and snorkel.
