Things to do in Boquete: must-see attractions

Visiting Boquete, a cool mountain escape in the Panamanian highlands

A comfortable climate and lush nature

Tucked into the mountains of Chiriquí province, Boquete is a small town known for its crisp air and vibrant green landscapes. Surrounded by coffee plantations, winding rivers, and cloud forests, it draws travelers looking for a quiet retreat. Its elevation of about 1,200 meters (nearly 4,000 feet) makes it a popular spot to escape the humidity of the lowlands. You will find a relaxed pace here, matched by sweeping valley views.

Hiking and exploring Volcán Barú

Volcán Barú, the highest point in Panama at 3,475 meters (11,400 feet), is the region's main draw. If you are up for a challenge, you can hike to the summit to catch a sunrise that, on a clear day, offers a rare view of both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. For more manageable treks, trails like the Sendero Los Quetzales offer an easy walk through biodiversity-rich cloud forests, where you might spot the elusive quetzal, a bird known for its brilliant, iridescent tail feathers.

Coffee plantations: a local specialty

Boquete sits at the center of Panama's most famous coffee region. The Geisha coffee variety, prized for its high quality and complex flavor profile, is grown here and shipped to roasters around the world. Many estates, such as Finca Lérida or Finca Dos Jefes, offer guided tours where you can walk through the entire production process from harvest to roast, ending with a tasting. It is a practical way to dig into the local culture.

Outdoor activities and relaxation

Boquete offers plenty of ways to get outside. The local rivers are prime spots for rafting and kayaking. For a slower pace, the Caldera hot springs are located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away, providing a chance to soak in a natural setting. The town also serves as a hub for ziplining through the canopy or horseback riding through the nearby valleys.

Authentic crafts and food

The Boquete artisan market is the best place to pick up locally made textiles and handmade jewelry. When it comes to food, keep an eye out for traditional dishes like sancocho, a hearty chicken and vegetable soup, or tamal, a corn-based dough steamed in leaves. Local bakeries, shaped by the European community that settled here, also turn out excellent pastries.

When to go

The best time to visit Boquete is from December to April. This is the dry season, meaning the weather stays cool and pleasant. This period also coincides with events like the Feria de las Flores y del Café in January, a festival celebrating the local flora and coffee harvest. The months from May to November are rainier, but the landscape is even greener and you will often find lower prices on accommodations.

How to get there

You can reach Boquete by flying into David, the capital of Chiriquí province. The flight from Panama City takes about 45 minutes and typically runs 70 to 100 PAB ($70 to $100) one way. From the David airport, a taxi or local bus will get you to Boquete in about an hour. For a more budget-friendly option, direct buses from Panama City take about 7 hours and cost around 20 PAB ($20).

The green side of Panama in Boquete

Boquete is not my favorite part of Panama. If you have never visited Central America, it might be interesting to go visit a coffee plantation or take on a challenging hike up the intense Baru volcano. Bird enthusiasts will also find plenty to love here.

However, the most interesting parts of Panama are its islands, like Bocas and San Blas. Only go to Boquete and El Interior if you have enough time in Panama.
