Visiting Shawinigan, Nature and Industrial Heritage in the Heart of Mauricie

Editor's note, updated on 02/21/2025

Located in Quebec, within the Mauricie region, Shawinigan is shaped by an industrial history rooted in hydroelectricity. Bordered by the Saint-Maurice River, the city pairs an outdoor lifestyle with industrial heritage. Its combination of history, culture, and wide-open spaces makes it a rewarding stop for travelers wanting to experience another side of Quebec.

La Cité de l'Énergie and Hydroelectric History

La Cité de l'Énergie stands out as the signature site of Shawinigan. This museum complex traces the city's role in the development of Canadian electricity. The permanent exhibition details industrial and scientific milestones, while guided tours take visitors through the old hydroelectric power plant. The observation tower delivers panoramic views across the region.

Mauricie National Park, a Natural Haven

Roughly twenty kilometres from Shawinigan, Mauricie National Park draws outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Lakes, dense forests, and trails make it ideal for hiking, canoeing, cycling, and winter sports like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The scenic drive winding through the park yields incredible overlooks, particularly in autumn when the maples turn brilliant shades of red and orange.

Downtown and the Saint-Maurice Promenade

Downtown Shawinigan is walkable, filled with local boutiques, art galleries, and coffee shops. The Saint-Maurice Promenade sets up a scenic riverside walk with views of the rapids and dams. Nearby green spaces, including Parc de l'Île Melville, provide quiet escapes just steps from the center.

Craft Breweries and Local Vibe

Shawinigan has built a reputation for its craft beer scene, anchored by several local microbreweries. They offer a great entry point into Quebec craft brews, often brewed with regional ingredients. Many host tastings and tours for anyone curious about the local brewing culture.

Cuisine Blending Quebec Tradition and Local Flavors

Shawinigan dining highlights traditional Quebec fare with an emphasis on regional ingredients. Tourtière, a spiced meat pie baked in a crust, remains a staple. Poutine is another local fixture, served in classic styles as well as creative variations crafted by local chefs. For dessert, sugar pie and maple-based treats are perennial favorites.

  • Le Trou du Diable (Centre): A well-known microbrewery serving upscale pub food.
  • Auberge Gouverneur (Centre): A restaurant focused on regional ingredients with a modern twist.
  • Chez Auger (Centre): A local institution famous for poutine and a casual atmosphere.

Summer (June to September) suits outdoor recreation and local festivals, while autumn (September-October) brings vibrant fall foliage. Winter (December to March) brings prime conditions for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

Shawinigan, a great home base in Quebec

Not far from Montreal and Quebec City, Shawinigan is a good base if you don't want to stay in a tiny village. You will be right in Mauricie National Park, and you can still enjoy the perks of the city. It is a great compromise.
