Visiting São Vicente

Positioned in the northern part of the Cape Verde archipelago, São Vicente is a high-energy island known for its deep musical roots, lively atmosphere, and rugged volcanic terrain. Its main urban hub, Mindelo, stands out as the cultural heartbeat of the nation.

Mindelo, the Cultural Heart of Cape Verde

The city of Mindelo anchors the island, drawing crowds for its nightlife and live Cape Verdean music sessions. The Palácio do Povo, a former colonial governor's residence, reflects the island's Portuguese heritage. At the Mercado Municipal, you get an unfiltered look at daily life through stalls piled high with tropical fruit and freshly caught fish. When evening arrives, neighborhood bars and restaurants regularly feature live performances of morna, Cape Verde's signature melancholic folk music.

The Beaches of São Vicente

The island's coastline caters well to swimming, lounging, and water sports. Praia da Laginha, the closest beach to downtown Mindelo, draws locals and visitors alike with its fine sand and clear turquoise water. Out on the windward side, the wilder beach at São Pedro attracts windsurfers thanks to steady, reliable offshore winds.

Hiking and Volcanic Landscapes

The island's volcanic backbone creates solid terrain for hiking day trips. Climbing Monte Verde, the highest peak on São Vicente, yields a full 360-degree panorama stretching across the island and out toward the open Atlantic. Meanwhile, the walking trails looping around Baía das Gatas mix coastal scenery with quiet walking paths.

Festivals and Cultural Events

São Vicente comes alive for its Carnaval every February, drawing travelers from across the archipelago. Every summer, the shores of Baía das Gatas play host to an open-air music festival that brings together regional and international acts for a weekend beach party.

A Seafaring Culinary Tradition

Local dining on São Vicente relies heavily on the Atlantic. Cachupa, the national stew made from hominy, beans, and meat or fish, gets various local interpretations around the island. Seafood enthusiasts should order percebes, gooseneck barnacles harvested directly from the crashing coastal rocks, alongside simple charcoal-grilled fish.

Where to eat?

  • Casa Café Mindelo (Mindelo): A popular spot pairing regional dishes with live music nights.
  • La Pergola (Mindelo): An intimate restaurant known for its seafood menu.
  • Chez Loutcha (Mindelo): A reliable local institution for traditional cachupa.

Where to stay?

  • Hotel Kira’s (Mindelo): A boutique hotel featuring decor inspired by Cape Verdean arts.
  • Residencial Che Guevara (Mindelo): A straightforward, wallet-friendly option offering a warm welcome and clean rooms.
  • Laginha Beach Guesthouse (Mindelo): A practical choice for staying right by the sand.

When to go?

The optimal window to visit São Vicente runs from November to June, when the weather stays dry and sunny. In February, the Mindelo carnival takes over the streets. In August, the Baía das Gatas music festival brings the shoreline to life.

How to get there

São Vicente is served by Cesária Évora Airport, with domestic hopper flights connecting from Praia and Sal starting around $90* one-way. Travelers from North America connect through Lisbon; once on the island, daily ferries link São Vicente to neighboring Santo Antão.

How to get around

Taxis and shared minibuses known as aluguers form the backbone of public transit in Mindelo. Renting a car or booking a guided day tour makes the most sense for exploring the more remote corners of the island.

Worth a visit!

While stopping over in Mindelo, get out of the marina and go explore the island! The Césaria Évora house, a hike up Monte Verde for a 360 degree view, not to mention the countless beaches...
