Visiting Tikjda, a natural retreat in the Djurdjura mountains
Located in the Djurdjura massif of Kabylie, Tikjda is a go-to spot for mountain scenery and outdoor activity. Sitting at an elevation of about 1,600 meters (5,250 feet), this station offers a high-altitude base for hiking, winter skiing, and spotting local flora and fauna.
A protected national park
Tikjda is part of the Djurdjura National Park, a protected zone where you can see rare wildlife like the Barbary macaque. Nature enthusiasts will find marked trails leading to clear, sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, similar to what you might find in the rugged sections of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Hiking and summits
Hikers can head out toward iconic peaks like the Lalla Khedidja summit, which reaches 2,308 meters (7,572 feet). Several routes wind through cedar forests and the jagged rock formations that define the Djurdjura range.
Winter sports and mountain activities
In winter, Tikjda functions as a small ski center with a few trails suited for beginners, provided there is enough snowfall. For those looking for more of a challenge, the park also offers opportunities for snowshoeing and ice climbing in specific areas.
Caves and rock formations
The area around Tikjda contains several natural caverns, including the Grotte du Macchabée, known for its extensive stalactites and stalagmites. These geological features offer a look into the complex history of the region.
Hearty mountain cuisine
The food in Tikjda draws heavily on Kabyle and mountain traditions. Tajine kabyle, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables, is a staple in the local mountain refuges. Aghroum, a traditional bread served with olive oil and honey, is the standard post-hike fuel. For a drink, lait fermenté (leben) is a common, refreshing, and filling choice.

When to go?
The best time to visit depends on what you want to do. From May to October, the weather is perfect for hiking. In December and January, snow turns the area into a small ski area popular with families.
How to get there?
Tikjda is about a 3-hour drive from Algiers. Public transit is limited, so renting a car or hiring a private taxi is the standard approach. From Bouira, a winding road climbs up to the station.
How to get around?
A rental car is the most practical way to explore the surroundings. Once you are at the station, walking is the only way to reach the trailheads and viewpoints.
Located right in the heart of the Djurdjura National Park, which has been classified as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve since 1987, you find plenty of breathtaking landscapes and very pure air in Tikjda.
