Nestled in the heart of the Hérault, the Pic Saint-Loup region offers a perfect blend of breathtaking natural landscapes, historic sites, and renowned gastronomy. During my trip to this area, I explored iconic spots like Valflaunès, the Chapelle de l'Hortus, the Château de Montferrand, Lac de Cécélés, Notre Dame de Londres, and Lauret. I spent my time hiking, swimming in the lake, visiting vineyards, and sampling the local cuisine. Here is a recap of my discoveries during a few days of wandering and trekking.
The Legend of Pic Saint-Loup
Back in the Middle Ages, three wealthy men lived in Saint-Martin-de-Londres, all in love with the same woman. Loup, Guiral, and Clair vowed to head off to war to win their beloved’s heart. Sadly, she passed away while they were gone. Devastated by grief, the three men decided to live as hermits, each on one of the peaks forming a triangle around the village. Every Christmas, they would light a great fire to signal their presence, but as time went on, the fires went out, and the three hermits eventually passed away. The mountains were then named in their honor: Saint-Guiral, Mont Aigoual, Pic Saint-Loup, and Mont Saint-Clair.
Hiking the Pic Saint-Loup
Itinerary and Preparation
For hiking enthusiasts, climbing the Pic Saint-Loup is an absolute must. The most popular route is the ascent of the southern face, starting from the Cazevieille parking lot. Allow about 2 hours round-trip for the 6-kilometer hike. While the trail is family-friendly, it’s best to wear sturdy shoes and take care on the rocky paths. Don't forget to pack plenty of water to stay hydrated during the climb.
What to See at the Summit
Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning 360-degree view. A large iron cross and the chapel of an old hermitage stand on the Pic's jagged ridge. From there, you can gaze out over the magnificent landscapes of the Cévennes and Mont Aigoual, the coastal plains stretching toward the Gulf of Lion, and the majestic Falaise de l'Hortus right across the way. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, have a picnic, and watch the shifting light transform the panorama, especially at sunrise and sunset. Pic Saint-Loup is famous for being one of the best spots to watch the sunset. The interplay of shadows and colors makes every sunset unique. If you’re lucky enough to be there at the right time, I highly recommend taking a moment to enjoy a picnic and soak in the beauty of the landscape before you.
Villages and Landmarks to Visit
Beyond the Pic Saint-Loup itself, the surrounding villages are well worth a detour. With their picturesque alleys, Romanesque churches, and medieval fortifications, these villages are living testaments to the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. Among the gems to explore, Saint-Martin-de-Londres stands out for its Romanesque church, whose cloister is a true masterpiece of Languedoc Romanesque art. Les Matelles is home to the Maison des Consuls, which houses the Pic Saint-Loup Museum, where you can learn about the daily lives of the garrigue’s first inhabitants. Also, don't miss the Château fort de Saint-Jean-de-Buèges, which is steeped in history and charm.
Valflaunès and the Chapelle de l'Hortus
My first stop for this second excursion in the region was Valflaunès, a charming village perched on the hills of the Pic Saint-Loup. I wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the traditional stone houses and panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards. Nearby, I visited the Chapelle de l'Hortus, an architectural treasure dating back to the 12th century. The interior of the chapel is adorned with well-preserved medieval frescoes that tell stories from that era. It was a fascinating experience to dive into the region's history.
The Château de Montferrand and Surroundings
Another historical gem you shouldn't miss is the Château de Montferrand, a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop. Touring the castle transported me back to a bygone era, with its majestic towers and impressive ramparts. From up there, I was able to admire breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding valley and the vineyards of the Pic Saint-Loup.
Relaxing at Lac de Cécélés
For a refreshing break, I headed to Lac de Cécélés, an idyllic spot surrounded by greenery. I dove into its crystal-clear waters, cooling off under the summer sun. The peaceful atmosphere and enchanting scenery made this a truly relaxing interlude.

Vineyard Visits and Tastings
Pic Saint-Loup is renowned for its quality wines, and I had the chance to visit several famous estates. I was warmly welcomed by passionate winemakers who showed me the winemaking process and the local grape varieties. I enjoyed tastings of exceptional wines, especially the famous Pic Saint-Loup reds, which reflect the unique terroir of the region. It was a real treat for the taste buds.
Local Gastronomy in Lauret
To round off my trip, I explored the local culinary delights in Lauret, a picturesque village. I sampled regional specialties, like local goat cheeses. The authentic flavors and fresh products made for a memorable culinary experience. Culinary specialties such as Calades de la Tour, Olives de Combaillaux, Pélardon cheeses, and local honey are what make this region famous. Pélardons are goat cheeses produced in the region's pure pastoral tradition. The goats graze freely in the garrigue, which gives their raw milk a unique and savory taste. Protected by an AOP label, these cheeses are prized for their creamy texture and delicate flavor.
In Conclusion, a Region Worth Seeing
My trip to Pic Saint-Loup was a true immersion in nature, history, and gastronomy. Between the hikes through stunning landscapes, visits to historic sites, refreshing swims at Lac de Cécélés, wine tastings at local estates, and the pleasures of the local food scene, I discovered a region rich in charm and authenticity. Pic Saint-Loup is a true paradise for lovers of nature, history, and good food. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or cultural discovery, this region is sure to win you over.
