Palais Garnier, the 1875 architectural masterpiece by Charles Garnier, dazzles with its marble Grand Escalier, gold and red auditorium featuring a ceiling by Chagall, and a Grand Foyer rivaling Versailles. An iconic monument of Imperial Paris, it blends exceptional heritage with a high-profile lineup of ballets and operas.
The Vienna State Opera is a cultural landmark in the heart of the Austrian capital. Opened in 1869, this Neo-Renaissance masterpiece hosts over 300 performances annually, from classic operas to ballets. Catch works by Mozart, Beethoven, or Verdi from a seat or grab a standing ticket for as little as 5 EUR (about $5.50).
In the heart of Milan, the sober facade of La Scala hides an opulent interior. This legendary stage has hosted elite opera and ballet performers since 1778. Its iconic red velvet boxes, grand auditorium, and massive chandelier define world-class performance. Visit the attached museum to view historic costumes and paintings from its storied past.
A cultural landmark, La Fenice Opera House is a legend in the world of opera and theater. Located in the San Marco neighborhood of Venice, its gold and red decor creates a stage graced by history's greatest composers. Since 1792, its 170 boxes, balconies, and chandeliers have defined elegance. Rebuilt after two fires, it remains a national treasure.
The Prague National Theatre, a neo-Renaissance masterpiece built in 1888, stands as a major cultural icon in the capital of Czechia. With its ornate architecture and lavish interiors, the venue hosts a rotating schedule of operas, ballets, and concerts. Performances by Mozart, Smetana, and Dvořák are staples. Tickets start at 200 CZK (about $9).
On Place de la Comédie, facing the Lyon City Hall, sits the striking Lyon Opera House. While the stone facade dates to the 19th century, the five-story glass barrel vault added by Jean Nouvel in 1993 creates a bold contrast. Catch a performance of opera, ballet, or a concert, and look for special behind-the-scenes tours.
Classical music lovers cherish the perfect acoustics here, while architecture buffs admire the neoclassical style with romantic touches. The Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest is unforgettable. Established in 1889, this auditorium is a city icon. Home to the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, its 41-meter dome and 652 seats host truly sublime performances.
Built on the site of a theater destroyed by fire in 1800, the Strasbourg Opera is a cultural staple in Strasbourg. Despite damage from Prussian shelling in 1870, it was restored to its original design. Today, the six muses on its historic facade overlook a modern program making opera accessible to everyone.

This opera house is truly magnificent. I highly recommend visiting the interior, which I find even more beautiful than the exterior. Guided tours are organized regularly. Even if you cannot see a show, you can still take a tour of the inside that is really worth it. It is one of the most beautiful opera houses I have ever seen.

As an opera fan, and especially of Maria Callas, the La Scala theater in Milan was one of the places I dreamed about most. I was not disappointed! I got chills just thinking about all the legends who have sung here. The auditorium itself is really very elegant, with its gilding and red boxes.

I had the chance to visit the legendary La Scala in Milan. But I have to admit that La Fenice seemed even more beautiful to me, with all its gold leaf and its grand stage. Whether you are an opera fan (like I am) or just someone who appreciates beautiful things, I recommend spending an evening in this magnificent theater. It is clearly one of the most beautiful monuments in Venice.

The Opéra Garnier, formerly the Paris Opera, is sublime. On the outside, but especially on the inside! Its grand staircase, gilding, and hallways are a feast for the eyes. One time, I had the chance to see an opera there and the feeling is not at all the same as in more modern venues, like the Opéra de Bastille. You really get the impression of being one of those opera lovers from the end of the 19th century, there to see the latest fashionable show. Simply magnificent, even if the tickets are definitely not cheap.

This is a real monument that is worth a look. The interior is simply spectacular, and going there for a performance is a truly unique experience. A heads up if you are tall, it is not always very comfortable. The seats are small and narrow, and after 3 or 4 hours you might walk out with some aches! For those who are not necessarily into opera, there are one hour "A Day at the Opera" shows that use lighting technology to highlight the building. It is a really nice way to discover the splendor of the place.

I have been there several times for guided tours, escape games, and shows. It is always a true delight. The lobby, the grand white marble staircase, the auditorium with its gold leaf and red velvet, not to mention the richly decorated foyer with its magnificent chandeliers and paintings, all offer a sumptuous setting. The only thing that bothers me is the ceiling painted by Chagall because it clashes too much with the rest of the space. Whether it is ballets or operas, I have always loved the performances. A small downside, the seats in the dress circle get uncomfortable quickly.

A true symbol of Italian opera, La Scala houses a sumptuous auditorium inside a building that looks fairly understated from the outside. I went to see a ballet, and I loved the show. Gilding, red velvet, a phenomenal chandelier, exceptional acoustics, and prodigious dancers. I also visited the La Scala museum right next door, which displays old instruments, costumes, and posters. A fascinating journey into the heart of Italian performing arts.
Pro tip: discounted tickets are sold at the box office a few hours before the performance. If you do not have a ticket, guided tours are also available.

The exterior of the building and the main hall with its gilding, ceiling, and chandelier reminded me of the Vienna State Opera, just on a smaller scale and with more affordable prices. I booked a ticket for Verdi's Aida in advance and I loved the evening. The staff was very pleasant. The sets, the musicians, and the singers were sumptuous. I had a great view of the stage and the orchestra from the first balcony. Do not miss the outdoor terrace at the Opera, which offers a nice view of the city.
