Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich houses four distinct museums dedicated to modern art, design, architecture, and graphic arts across 12,000 square meters. The building, designed by Stephan Braunfels, features a dramatic glass rotunda and roof openings. The vision for a space dedicated to scientific and technological progress came from the Association of German Engineers, led by hydraulic energy specialist Oskar von Miller. Established in 1903, the Deutsches Museum in Munich faced early political pressure. Von Miller fought to maintain independence, famously refusing a statue of Bismarck, yet the museum later suffered under Nazi control.
BMW Welt stands where the 1972 Munich Olympic stadium once operated. This free exhibition space focuses on the latest models and future mobility. I only visited the painting collections, which are very rich with works by Picasso, Matisse, and even Magritte, as well as the design section, which notably features some splendid Bauhaus furniture. It is hard to see everything in one afternoon. I recommend getting there early on Sunday to avoid the line.

I would not rank this museum among the most important ones I have had the opportunity to discover during my various travels. Nevertheless, I remember that out of the few museums I visited in Munich, this one was among the most interesting. In this temple dedicated to science and technology, you can see numerous machines of all sizes and from all eras (with a great collection of old military planes), tools, man-made objects, and fun, educational spaces. Science enthusiasts and curious minds will be delighted.
