Where to stay near Alhambra: the 3 areas to know in 2026
Our fifteen reviews give 5 out of 5 fourteen times, and three of them add the same instruction. Cloclo writes « book your tickets online if you can, well in advance », Ariane « remember to book your ticket several weeks in advance », and Lili Be warns that « you have to be strategic about the time of year, the day, and the hour you go ».
Here is why: the Nasrid Palaces, the part of the site Toto calls « THE palace to see absolutely », are visited in 30 minute slots, 300 tickets per slot, and the body that runs the site warns that once that half hour has passed the right to visit is lost. The ticket is collected at least an hour beforehand, ID in hand. The time you leave your room is therefore written on it, and there are still 70 metres of climb between Plaza Nueva, the square in the centre where the ascent begins, and the Gate of Justice, one of the main entrances to the walled site.

The two ways to stay near Alhambra
The general day visit costs $25*, free for under-12s provided their ticket is bought at the same time as the others. What is being decided is the time at which you will stand in front of the Nasrid Palaces, because that slot cannot be made up.
| What changes | On the hill | At Plaza Nueva or in Granada |
|---|---|---|
| To the Gate of Justice | From 164 to 741 metres | From 513 metres, or a bus ride |
| The climb before the checkpoint | None, the addresses are above it | 70 metres from Plaza Nueva |
| Collecting the ticket an hour before | On foot, with no transport | The climb, or lines 30 and 32 |
| The scores served | 9.0, then 8.6, 8.5 and 8.4 | 8.7 and 8.5 |
| The locations scored | 9.6 for the address inside the walls | 9.8 and 9.7 |
| Dining after closing time | You have to come back down | The tables are around the corner |
| The night visit to the palaces | Walk back | Back up the climb, at night |
| Who it suits | Anyone coming for the Alhambra | Anyone coming for Granada |
How long to the entrance, area by area?
These distances are STRAIGHT LINES, and the altitudes come from a terrain model: the public OSRM server has no walking profile, and on a hill a driving route would teach nothing to someone going up on foot. No walking time is served, because here it is the climb that decides it.
| From | Time | How |
|---|---|---|
| The Alhambra hill | 164 to 741 m | on foot, no climb The Generalife is 304 metres from the address inside the walls. |
| Plaza Nueva, at the foot of the Cuesta de Gomérez | 513 m | on foot, 70 m of climb The Puerta de las Granadas, where the Cuesta de Gomérez begins, is 247 metres from the Gate of Justice. |
| The rest of Granada, from the centre to the cathedral | beyond 513 m | lines 30 and 32, or on foot Both lines leave from Plaza Isabel la Católica. |

The Alhambra hill From 164 to 741 metres from the Gate of Justice
Anyone with an early slot
Our four addresses up here are already at the monument's own height, between 752 and 804 metres above sea level, when Plaza Nueva sits at 700: the slot is met with no climb and no bus, and the ticket is collected on foot, ID in hand. One of them is even inside the walls, at number 53 of the Calle Real de la Alhambra. In exchange, the evening tables are down below: the hill empties out when the site closes.
Located at the top of a hill, this fortress is impressive and imposing from the outside

Anyone who comes for Granada first, and adds the Alhambra
Past Plaza Nueva it is a different kind of stay, and Granada has its own guide with us: five districts detailed street by street, from the Albaicín to the Sacromonte. We copy none of their addresses across, the card below leads there. For the monument itself, bus lines 30 and 32 link Plaza Isabel la Católica to the Alhambra: that is what replaces the climb, and what has to be set against the time on the ticket.
The Alhambra also offers beautiful views of the city
Stay in the city
Where to stay in Granada
Granada has its own guide: neighbourhoods, prices, our recommended hotels.
Pros
- Five districts detailed in our Granada guide
- Lines 30 and 32 go up to the monument
- The tapas of the centre without the hill
Cons
- A bus or a climb before every checkpoint
- No address served here, by choice
Our tips for booking the right place
- The Nasrid Palaces slot cannot be made up, and it is what sets your alarm: This is the rule that changes everything else. The Nasrid Palaces, that is to say the part nobody comes to miss, are visited in blocks of 30 minutes, with at most 300 admissions per block and roughly 50 people every 5 minutes. The time printed on the ticket is binding, and the body that runs the site writes that once that slot has passed the right to visit this space is lost. On top of that comes collecting the ticket, at least an hour before that time, on production of an official ID document. Bill lived it: « get a ticket that gives you access to everything, especially the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife, as you will be checked several times », and « you will definitely NEED a passport or ID card to get through all those checkpoints ». In other words, the time you leave your room is not a preference.
- Three of our fifteen reviews say the same thing: book weeks ahead: Cloclo writes « book your tickets online if you can, well in advance », labaroudeuzh « remember to book your ticket in advance », and Ariane is the most precise: « remember to book your ticket several weeks in advance and pay attention to the tour options to make sure you have access to the entire site ». The figures bear them out: 300 admissions per half hour in the palaces, and an annual ceiling of 2,763,500 visitors for the site as a whole. MathildeFlor warns for her part that « there are always a lot of people », and Lili Be draws the conclusion: « you have to be strategic about the time of year, the day, and the hour you go ».
- The right ticket is not the cheapest one, and two of our members saw the difference: The general day visit costs $25* and opens the whole route, Nasrid Palaces and Generalife included. That is the one Bill recommends, in so many words: « get a ticket that gives you access to everything ». Ariane says the same thing differently: « pay attention to the tour options to make sure you have access to the entire site ». The night visit to the Nasrid Palaces, $15*, is a different admission at a different hour: Tuesday to Saturday from 10pm to 11.30pm between 1 April and 14 October, Friday and Saturday from 8pm to 9.30pm the rest of the year. Under-12s go in free, but their ticket must be bought at the same time as the others; over-65s from the European Union, youth card holders and people certified at 33 % disability pay a reduced rate, on production of proof.
- Half a day, and 2 hours for the gardens alone: Three of our members give the same length of time. Cloclo: « plan on a half day ». Bill: the site « will easily take up half a day of your time ». Caromexico: « plan on a good half day to let yourself get swept up in the magic of the scenery and the site, and bring some good hiking shoes ». Toto, the only one to give 4 out of 5, divides that time up: « save yourself 2 hours to walk through the gardens, and especially the Generalife ». The geography explains the tiredness: there are 459 metres between the Gate of Justice and the Generalife, which is another 23 metres higher, and the gate itself, opened in 1348, has an inner ramp at 13 %. For that crossing Bill recommends « following the Paseo de las Torres (the path of the towers), which offers lovely views of the Alhambra grounds ».
- The view over Granada, and it is the hill's only comfort argument: Two of our members mention the same benefit, and it is not the monument. Shanour K writes that « the Generalife gardens offer a superb view of Granada and a very pleasant walk », julies_journeys that « the Alhambra also offers beautiful views of the city ». That view exists from the hill outside opening hours, and it is the one comfort argument this page keeps for sleeping up there: at 752 metres above sea level for the lowest address in the area and 804 for the highest, the evening and the early morning are spent above the city, while the site is shut.
- Turning up exactly at the time of your slot: the ticket is collected at least an hour before.
- Setting off without official ID: it is asked for when the ticket is collected.
- Counting on the end of the day in winter: from 15 October to 31 March the site closes at 6pm.
- Buying a ticket that does not include the Nasrid Palaces: that is the part booked by time slot.
