What to know about Ipanema Beach, from postcard views to local life
Famed globally thanks to a classic song, Ipanema Beach is one of the most iconic spots in Rio de Janeiro. Tucked between Leblon and Arpoador, it blends a dreamlike setting with a diverse crowd and scenes of daily life that are quintessentially Rio.
A rhythmic and varied spot
Ipanema is a long stretch of white sand facing a sea that is often rough, with the silhouettes of the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) mountains acting as a backdrop.
The beach is divided by numbered lifeguard towers, or postos, which delineate zones with distinct vibes. Posto 9 is arguably the most recognizable, where you find a young, festive, and sometimes activist crowd. Posto 10 is more family-oriented, while Arpoador draws surfers, especially at sunrise and sunset. The entire area stays active from morning until nightfall.
Beach life the Rio way
More than just a place to swim, Ipanema is a social stage. Street vendors circulate all day with coolers filled with mate gelado (iced mate tea), cheese crackers, or shrimp skewers. Foot-volley and frescobol players take over the sand, while others nap under the shade of a parasol.
On weekends, the avenue running along the beach closes to traffic. Cyclists, families, and joggers claim the space in an atmosphere that is relaxed but always loud with energy.
A well-located base to explore Rio
The Ipanema neighborhood is affluent, pleasant, and well-connected. You will find a wide variety of restaurants, bars, and shops just a few minutes’ walk from the sand. On Sundays, the Feira Hippie (Hippie Market) at Praça General Osório draws both travelers and locals looking for crafts or souvenirs.
In the evening, you can extend the day at local bars or climb the Arpoador rock to watch one of the most famous sunsets in Rio, a daily ritual that is often met with applause.
In my opinion, Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro is prettier than Copacabana, which is the more famous one. It has a bike and pedestrian path running along it, and there are more trees than in Copacabana, which is located right next to a very busy road. In Ipanema, the surrounding restaurants and bars are also classier, and the neighborhood in general has a better crowd. Go for a walk at the Garota de Ipanema rock for an unbeatable view of both beaches.
